La Liga kicks off, and on the opening matchday, we’ll have an Espanyol side that struggled to avoid relegation against an Atlético Madrid team with title ambitions.
The ‘Pericos’ struggled until the very last day of last season, an experience they don’t want to repeat.
Meanwhile, the ‘Colchoneros’ finished far behind Barcelona and have strengthened their squad to dethrone Spain’s two football giants.

Por que apostar no Espanyol?
Espanyol came back to life on the final day. After five straight losses, the Catalan side went into the last matchday of the 2024/25 LaLiga season needing a win and depending only on themselves—and that’s exactly what they did. A 2-0 victory over Las Palmas saw them reach 42 points, two above Leganés.
The campaign was disappointing overall, ending with 11 wins, nine draws, and 18 losses. The team scored 40 goals but conceded 51. Coach Manolo González retained his position because of his familiarity with the club, having secured promotion two years ago. The board recognizes that the upcoming season will present significant challenges.
First of all, they lost their best player, goalkeeper Joan García, who joined local rivals and arch-enemy Barcelona. Along with him, defender Marash Kumbulla returned to Roma, midfielder Alex Král went back to Union Berlin, fellow midfielder Urko González joined Real Sociedad, and striker Alejo Véliz moved to Tottenham before later signing with Rosario Central.
The new signings are not particularly strong, and none are especially exciting, except perhaps for Marko Dmitrović. While the Serbian goalkeeper is not Joan García, he can still perform well enough to soften the blow of losing the Catalan star.
In preseason, they defeated Peralada (4-1), Southampton (2-1), Wolfsburg (1-0), and Union Berlin (1-0), while drawing against Newcastle (2-2) and Girona, although they later lost to the latter on penalties in the final of the Copa de Catalunya. Javi Puado and Kike García were the top scorers of the preseason with four goals each, although two of Puado’s came from the penalty spot.
Por que apostar no Atlético de Madrid?
Atlético Madrid finished third last year with 76 points, 12 behind champions Barcelona. They recorded 22 wins, 10 draws, and six losses, scoring 68 goals and conceding 30—the second-best defensive record in the league, just behind Athletic Bilbao (29).
The ‘Rojiblancos’ took part in the last FIFA Club World Cup, where they lost their opening match 4-0 to PSG. They then beat the Seattle Sounders (3-1) and Botafogo (1-0), but it wasn’t enough to advance, as they were eliminated in the group stage.
They played two preseason matches, losing the first 1-0 to Porto before defeating Newcastle 2-0, with goals from Julián Álvarez and Antoine Griezmann.
The team saw the departures of Rodrigo de Paul, Ángel Correa, Rodrigo Riquelme, Samuel Lino, Reinildo Mandava, Axel Witsel, Thomas Lemar, and Saúl Ñíguez. However, those losses were covered well with the arrivals of Thiago Almada, Alejandro Baena, Matteo Ruggeri, Jhonny Cardoso, Giacomo Raspadori, Dávid Hancko, and Marc Pubill.
Diego Simeone has certainly strengthened all areas of the squad, making his team more competitive, giving better support to star player Julián Álvarez, and reinforcing the defense so Jan Oblak doesn’t have to work as hard.
Final Betting Analysis: Espanyol vs. Atlético Madrid
It’s the start of the tournament, and no one can be entirely sure how the teams will perform. However, based on last season’s results and analyzing the squads and new signings, Atlético Madrid appears to be several steps ahead of Espanyol, which is why they are expected to take the win.
Os números em Troca de Gambila favor Atlético Madrid, with their Moneyline set at -171, while Espanyol stands at +574, and a draw is priced at +322.
Last season, both matches ended in draws—1-1 in Barcelona and 0-0 in Madrid. But that’s not all: the previous four meetings between them have all been draws, and in the most recent 12 games, Atlético has four wins, Espanyol has 3, and there have been five draws.
Go for a win for Atlético Madrid. If you bet $100 at -171, you will gain $59 for a total payout of $159.
