More importantly, the pricing tells you the line is not really 3.5; it is somewhere between 3.5 and 4, and the book has used the price rather than the number to express it.<br><br><strong>The practical rule:<\/strong> when a total looks obviously wrong to you, check the price before congratulating yourself. A &#8220;cheap&#8221; Under at +125 and an expensive Over at -159 usually means the market already knows what you think you have spotted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How Books Build the Number<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three inputs, roughly in order of weight.<br><br><strong>Power ratings.<\/strong> Every book runs a model rating all 32 teams against each other. The rating produces an expected win probability for each of the 17 games, and those probabilities are summed. A team favoured in eleven games, and an underdog in six, does not project to eleven wins; it projects to the sum of its individual probabilities, which is almost always lower.<br><br><strong>Strength of schedule.<\/strong> The most underrated input in the entire market. New Orleans, Cleveland and Cincinnati hold three of the easiest schedules in the league this season; Chicago, Miami and Green Bay hold three of the hardest. <strong>Miami&#8217;s is the second-hardest in the NFL<\/strong>, with six games against last season&#8217;s playoff teams. That alone is worth a game or two in either direction before anyone throws a pass.<br><br><strong>Public money.<\/strong> Popular teams get inflated totals because books have to balance the money, not predict the future. Recognisable franchises with large fanbases attract over money every August, and the number drifts accordingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Market Versus Model: Where the Edge Lives<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The single most useful exercise in this market is comparing the posted total against independent projections. Those two figures should be roughly consistent, and they are. But being favoured in eleven games does not mean winning eleven; a team favoured by three points wins roughly 60% of the time, not 100%.<br><br>Add the implied win probability of each individual game and compare the sum to the posted total. If they disagree substantially, one of the two markets is wrong, and it is usually worth finding out which.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Mistakes That Lose Win-Total Bets<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Betting the team rather than the number.<\/strong> Every fan believes their team wins ten. The question is never &#8220;are they good&#8221;; it is &#8220;are they better than 8.5, at -110?&#8221;<br><br><strong>Ignoring the quarterback contingency.<\/strong> A 17-game bet assumes a quarterback plays most of it. Cincinnati&#8217;s entire season has hinged on Burrow&#8217;s availability for years. Those are not footnotes; they are the bet.<br><br><strong>Treating win totals as short-term.<\/strong> Your money is locked up from September to January. That is five months of capital tied to one outcome, and nobody accounts for the opportunity cost.
