And Chicago, who scored 59 points<\/strong> in Week 1, scored three<\/strong>.

Here is what the NFL Week 2 told us, what it did not, and where we were wrong again.

Winners<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Josh Allen.<\/strong> Five touchdowns to open Buffalo’s new building in a 41-31<\/strong> win over Detroit that produced 72 points<\/strong>: 19 more than the highest total on the board. Jared Goff threw 327 and four scores himself and it was not close to enough. The Bills are 2-0.

Brock Purdy.Twenty-of-22 for 287 yards and two touchdowns<\/strong> in a 35-13 win over Miami. A 91% completion rate in a professional football game doesn’t need embellishment. San Francisco are 2-0 and have now beaten the Rams and the Dolphins by a combined 44 points.

Drew Lock.<\/strong> We will come back to this below, because we got it badly wrong. The Seattle backup went 19-of-26 for 235 yards and three touchdowns<\/strong> em um 31-7<\/strong> win at Arizona, with Jaxon Smith-Njigba catching nine for 155 and all three scores. The defending champions are 2-0 without their starting quarterback.

Dak Prescott.26-of-31, 279 yards, four touchdowns<\/strong>, passing Romo’s franchise record of 248 in a 37-20 win over Washington. CeeDee Lamb caught eight for 153 and two scores.

The Las Vegas Raiders.<\/strong> 2-0, and nobody is discussing it. Kirk Cousins threw three touchdowns in a 26-14<\/strong> win at the Chargers, the same building where Arizona won in Week 1.

Matthew Stafford.<\/strong> Four touchdowns and 327 yards in a 28-6<\/strong> dismantling of the Giants on Monday night, with Davante Adams catching eight for 195<\/strong>. The Rams are 1-1 and look nothing like the team that lost in Melbourne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Losers<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Los Angeles Chargers.0-2, with two home defeats<\/strong> to Arizona and Las Vegas. Fourteen points in each. A roster that got Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt back and hired two new coordinators has produced 28 points in two games at SoFi Stadium.

Houston Texans.0-2<\/strong>, and the manner is worse than the record. C.J. Stroud threw the ball 55 times for 353 yards and no touchdowns<\/strong> in a 20-6 defeat to Cincinnati. A week after conceding 36 to Buffalo, the defense held an opponent to 20, and the offence could not score.

Ravens de Baltimore.<\/strong> Beaten 24-17 at home by New Orleans<\/strong> as an 8.5-point favorite, conceding 15 unanswered in the fourth quarter<\/strong>. Tyler Shough went 27-of-34 for the Saints. This was the clearest upset of the weekend.

Atlanta Falcons.0-2<\/strong> after a 34-3<\/strong> defeat to Carolina, in which they scored a second-quarter field goal and nothing else. Bryce Young threw three touchdowns.

Comandantes de Washington.<\/strong> 0-2, beaten by 17, and Jayden Daniels left with a dislocated left elbow<\/strong>; the second time he has suffered that injury.

Golfinhos de Miami.<\/strong> 0-2, beaten 35-13, exactly as a 4.5-win total implied.

Colts de Indian\u00e1polis.<\/strong> 0-2, and hard done by. They led Kansas City at half-time, forced overtime at 27-27, and lost 33-30<\/strong> on a Butker field goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overreactions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

“The Bears were a mirage.”<\/strong> They scored 59 in Week 1 and three in Week 2, and the difference is not a philosophical one. Caleb Williams was carted off<\/strong> against Minnesota, and Tyson Bagent is in line to start. You cannot evaluate an offence across those two games because it was not the same offence.

“Drew Lock has solved Seattle’s problem.”<\/strong> Three touchdowns in a rout is a real performance, and it came against Arizona<\/strong>: a 4.5-win roster we described in Week 1 as the youngest and thinnest in the conference, immediately after they beat the Chargers. Seattle won the Super Bowl on defense and are still winning on defense. Ask again when Lock plays a good one.

“The Rams are back.”<\/strong> They beat a New York team that scored six points. Los Angeles are 1-1, and Myles Garrett is still out<\/strong>. The number we flagged in Week 1 has not changed.

“Baltimore is in trouble.”<\/strong> They are 1-1, having beaten Indianapolis by 18 and lost a game they led into the fourth quarter. One bad home afternoon against a team with the league’s easiest schedule is not a season.

“Houston’s defense is broken.”<\/strong> It held Cincinnati to 20 points. The offence scored six on 55 pass attempts. The problem this week was at the other end of the field, and pretending otherwise misdiagnoses a team that is genuinely in trouble.

“Carolina are a playoff team.”<\/strong> They have now played a 96-point shootout and a 37-point rout. Two games, two completely different football teams, and no way to tell yet which one is real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where We Were Wrong<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Three calls from our Week 2 preview, and two of them were bad.

Our worst was the Giants.<\/strong> We wrote that getting New York at nearly 3-to-1 was “the value of the week”<\/strong>, took them at +7.5, and predicted Rams 24-20. Los Angeles won 28-6<\/strong>. The Giants scored two field goals. That is not a near miss; the reasoning (a coaching upgrade, a desperate home favorite without its best defender) produced a 22-point defeat.

We were wrong about Drew Lock, twice over.<\/strong> We wrote that a 41.5 total meant “nobody expects Lock to change the equation” and predicted a 20-17 Seattle win. He threw three touchdowns in a 31-7<\/strong> rout. We had the right side for entirely the wrong reasons, which is worth less than nothing.

And we were wrong on the Buffalo total.<\/strong> We called 53.5 “the highest on the board and the number worth thinking about rather than the side”, and argued that a short week, a new building, and a travelling side all pointed to fewer<\/strong> points. The game produced 72<\/strong>.

What we got right:<\/strong> we predicted Chiefs 27-20 over Indianapolis and wrote that 6.5 points against a team on a short turnaround was a friendlier spot than -290 implied. The Colts lost by three in overtime and covered comfortably.

And the Week 1 overreaction we flagged has held.<\/strong> We wrote that Chicago’s 59 points came against a Carolina defense that also conceded 37, and to “ask again after they have played a defense.” They played Minnesota and scored three. We also said Arizona were not a playoff team; they lost 31-7 at home.

The AFC West call keeps getting worse.<\/strong> We picked the Chargers to win it and placed Kansas City third. The Chiefs are 2-0. The Chargers are 0-2 with two home defeats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The One Number That Actually Matters<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Everything else on this page is two data points in a seventeen-game season. Chicago’s season was built on a quarterback in his third year finally producing, and he produced 59 points in a single afternoon before leaving the field on a cart seven days later.

Washington has the same problem<\/strong>, with Jayden Daniels dislocating an elbow for the second time and the Commanders at 0-2.

Last week the number that counted was Myles Garrett’s return date. This week it is two quarterbacks, and both of their teams were counting on a step forward that now has to wait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
