MLB World Series 2023 Roundup: Rangers 4-1 Diamondbacks

Last Updated on November 2, 2023 5:00 pm by Erwin Noguera

The World Series remains in the American League for 2023, but with a new owner, as the Texas Rangers crowned a dream season and became the new kings of Major League Baseball.

After winning only one game in Arlington, Bruce Bochy’s team showed its offensive power outside by defeating the Diamondbacks, who were weak at the pitching level, in all three games in Arizona.

Led by Corey Seager, the Texan club gave hits to most of the local pitchers while the pitching staff and relievers were also at a high level, leaving Torey Lovullo’s team with no options.

After losing the World Series in 2010 and 2011, the Texas Rangers are the holders of the most important title and are hoping to create a dynasty that will begin to replace what the Houston Astros have achieved in recent years.

Texas Rangers’ history was split in two at Arizona’s Chase Field after defeating the Diamondbacks 5-0 in Game 5 to become World Series champions for the first time, ending 72 years of frustration for their fans.

Bruce Bochy’s team had to wait until the top of the seventh inning when Mitch Garver singled to send Corey Seager home.

But in the team, when they only had a 1-0 lead, Jonah Heim came up to drive in two more runs, and Marcus Semien made the final 5-0 with a home run that towed in Heim himself.

Again, Paul Sewald failed for the D-backs in the ninth inning, a different situation from Texas, which had a quality outing by Nathan Eovaldi, who allowed no runs in six innings. Aroldis Chapman accurately unveiled the seventh, while Josh Sborz took care of the eighth and ninth, conceding just one hit and striking out four opponents.

Except for the second game, when they lost 9-1, the Rangers were far superior in the series, even though Adolis Garcia missed the last two matches due to injury.

Shortstop Corey Seager, who ended up being elected MVP of the ‘Fall Classic’ in 2023, deserves a separate chapter. He gave three home runs in five games, with six runs scored, six runs batted in, and an impressive OPS of 1.137.

He equaled Sandy Koufax, Bob Gibson, and Reggie Jackson as players with multiple most valuable awards, and is also the first to be MVP playing in American League and National League teams since he had already achieved it with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2020.

Another player to highlight for the champion franchise was Eovaldi, as he became the second pitcher to win five games and not lose once in a postseason, something only Stephen Strasburg had accomplished with the Washington Nationals in 2019.

Bruce Bochy joined the club of managers with four World Series, along with Joe Torre and Walter Alston, but still falls short of Joe McCarthy and Casey Stengel’s record of seven.

In addition, Bochy equaled Tony La Russa and Sparky Anderson as the only managers to win championships with both American and National League teams, as he had touched glory three times with the San Francisco Giants (2010, 2012, and 2014).

With a young core and quality players under contract for several years, plus the possibility of the return of two-time CY Young Jacob deGrom next year, the Texas team will look to repeat in 2024 what they did in a year where they achieved the milestone all franchises aspire for.
