Austrian GP 2023 Preview

Verstappen, the absolute leader of the championship with 195 points, comes from winning comfortably in Canada and has won 6 of the 8 races this season. The other 2 have been in the hands of his teammate, Sergio Perez, who has been dropping his level and has been off the podium in the last three events, but remains second in the overall standings.

Among the rivals, Fernando Alonso is the one who has been able to get closer to Verstappen and his Red Bull, however, he is still far away. Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton have been raising their level and the Englishman managed to be on the podium in the last two races, the opposite case for Ferrari, which is going downhill and has only been able to get 1 podium in the whole year with Charles Leclerc. Aston Martin has moved into third place in the fight of the teams, displacing the Italian team.

Race Info

In Austria, we will again have a sprint race on Saturday, and already the FIA announced that it will reverse the decision that in Q3 of the “sprint shootout,” only new soft tires could be in use, and now the drivers will be able to use any type of tire, whether new or used. This after in Baku English Lando Norris (McLaren) was unable to run in Q3 for not having this set of new tires available.

That said, qualifying for the race will be on Friday, June 30, while Saturday will be for sprint only: qualifying and race. The Austrian Grand Prix will be held on Sunday. It should be remembered that for this year the rules have changed, since in 2022 the result in the sprint affected the place on the grid for Sunday’s race and it is no longer so: what happens on Saturday, stays on Saturday.

Precisely this week there have been many comments and requests, from drivers and fans, for changes in the F1 format. On the one hand, Fernando Alonso said that it would be good to return to one-lap qualifying, as it was done many years ago. Also, concerning the sprint race, some fans have given the idea that the reserve drivers should be the ones to run these races to give more excitement. We should expect that the FIA will take note of these suggestions since in recent years they have made decisions that have not pleased the Formula 1 world.

Austrian GP 2023 Betting Picks

Already in what will be Sunday’s race, last year was a great fight between Leclerc and Verstappen, with both overtaking each other constantly and finally the Monegasque taking the victory. By the looks of it this year it is highly unlikely to be repeated and the Dutchman would be the winner, although Alonso has said that Aston Martin will try to prevent it. It is believed that it will be a 1-2 for Red Bull, but it will depend a lot on the level of Checo Perez. If the Mexican keeps making the same mistakes, Alonso is likely to snatch second place.

Precisely Max and Alain Prost are the maximum winners of this circuit. Both have 3, so the current world champion hopes to achieve his fourth triumph and be at the top. Valtteri Bottas (2), Hamilton (1), and Leclerc (1) are the other drivers of the current grid who have also won. Meanwhile, McLaren and Ferrari have 6 races, Mercedes 5, and Red Bull 3.

  1. Max Verstappen
  2. Fernando Alonso
  3. Sergio Perez
