Belmont Stakes 2023 Preview and Betting Odds

Last Updated on June 6, 2023 3:33 pm by Erwin Noguera

As the third and final leg of the prestigious Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes is one of the year’s most anticipated horse racing events. Scheduled for June 10, 2023, at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York, the 155th running of the event promises to be an exciting and competitive race.

Known as the “Test of the Champion,” the Belmont Stakes challenges the best three-year-old thoroughbreds to compete in a grueling 1.5-mile or 12-furlong race, the longest of the Triple Crown races.

After two dramatic finishes in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, we have several contenders who could spring another upset on June 10 in the Belmont Stakes. There is no doubt that the race promises to be equally or much more exciting than the first two, considering that there is no possible winner of the Triple Crown.

We say this because Mage and Venezuelan jockey Javier Castellano could not repeat their Kentucky Derby success in the Preakness Stakes. As a result, they had to settle for third place in the race, as the winner was National Treasure and Puerto Rican jockey John Velazquez, who had everything to repeat in this race.

Likewise, there is a lot of competition for this event, as we have Forte and Tapit Trice, both of whom are in phenomenal shape and, in addition, have a longer rest, which could serve as an advantage.

Belmont Stakes 2023 Schedule

As mentioned, the Belmont Stakes will be next Saturday, June 10, 2023, at Belmont Park, Elmont, New York, with a prize pool of $1,500,000.

Belmont Stakes History

Created in 1867, it is the oldest of the Triple Crown races, predating the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. The race is named after August Belmont, a prominent financier, and thoroughbred breeder in the 19th century. Throughout its history, the race has been run at various distances and tracks, but since 1926 it has been run at its current distance of 1.5 miles.

The Belmont Stakes is often called the “Test of the Champion” because it is the Triple Crown series’ final and most demanding race. To win the maximum trophy, a horse must win the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont Stakes in the same year. This feat has only been accomplished 13 times in history, with the most recent winner being Justify in 2018.

Todd Pletcher has a good chance in 2023 after training last year’s Belmont Stakes champion. Despite being the clear favorite for the Kentucky Derby, Forte was unable to participate. He returns to the Belmont Park track, but his form remains solid.

Angel of Empire may not be as popular as other contenders, but this horse has steadily improved throughout his career. With a solid pedigree and a skilled trainer, he could be a dark horse in the Belmont Stakes. This colt has shown that he is getting faster and faster and manages to finish third in the Kentucky Derby. As such, he won the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby and the Grade 2 Risen Star Stakes in his previous races.

Finally, we have Tapit Trace, another of Todd Pletcher’s colts, and it is complex to rule out that this colt can take the win. While he had no luck in the Kentucky Derby, finishing seventh, he still managed a career-high speed of 95.
