2023 Gold Cup Final Roundup: Panama 0-1 Mexico

Last Updated on July 17, 2023 3:27 pm by Erwin Noguera

The 17th edition of the CONCACAF Gold Cup has wrapped up, as we just went through an exciting final match and have crowned a champion for this edition.

So, to our surprise, 3 of the four teams that we expected to get to the semi-finals from our starting prediction indeed made it, BUT our prediction for the Runner-Ups was spoiled by the “uninvited guest”. But we cannot lie, we love surprises as much as any other football fan.

We, however, got the Cup winner right from our first prediction and couldn’t be any more proud of it.

So now, we are going to break down what took place in the match between Mexico, who made their way to the finals by stopping Jamaica with a 3-0 score, and Panama who got a surprising upset victory after facing the USA in a match that went to 1-1, but was settled on a penalty shoot-out that gave them the victory on a 5-4 lead.

We are going to break down the Final match of this exciting event.

What took place

The Mexican National Team managed to place themselves ahead by a minimal difference and has once again crowned themselves as the champions in the Concacaf Gold Cup.

The Final match took place in the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, this Sunday, where both “El Tri” and Panama came out strong looking to make a statement.

It was, however, clear that the Mexican team was superior during the whole match, but it wasn’t until the final few minutes that Santiago Giménez managed to score that one leading goal that allowed “El Tri” to claim the Championship.

Giménez’s goal came after a remarkable sequence of events. Edson Álvarez made a crucial block in the penalty area to deny Iván Anderson’s cross, allowing Orbelín Pineda to initiate a counterattack. He then dribbled away from danger and delivered a perfect pass to the center circle.

From there, Giménez showcased his speed and skill, evading defenders Harold Cummings and Fidel Escobar as he sprinted into the penalty area. With composure and finesse, he executed a clever scuffed shot, finding the back of the net for his fourth goal in 18 international appearances. With this, the Mexican team now has claimed their 9th title in the Gold Cup.
