The Spanish team, Villarreal surprised and crushed Juventus 3-0 in Turin and qualified for the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League. The Yellow Submarine, who had Gerónimo Rulli as one of the figures, eliminated the Vecchia Signora; who had Paulo Dybala entering from the substitutes’ bench, due to goals from Gerard Moreno, Pau Torres, and Arnaut Danjuma. This after tying 1-1 in the first leg in Spain.

The Italian team led by Massimiliano Allegri started much better at the Allianz Stadium, with several arrivals and transforming Villarreal’s Argentinian goalkeeper into the most outstanding player of the match up to that moment. Furthermore, luck was not on their side either; Dusan Vlahovic had a clear chance on goal with a powerful shot from inside the area that burst the crossbar.

Villarreal tried to respond with a shot from Lo Celso that went very close to the post. Either way, Juventus’ superiority remained.

The tie was completely open, the game was back and forth for both teams that were ineffective in front of goal. Finally, the first half ended with a score equal to 0.

The Serbian Dušan Vlahović and Álvaro Morata were the most incisive of the Italians in the first half; that ended goalless thanks to the interventions of the Argentine goalkeeper.

Second Half

After the break, the locals lost clarity of the game and Villarreal regained control of the midfield. Emery knew how to move his pieces on the bench and the variants completely changed the match and the tie.

Francis Coquelin, who came on for Manu Trigueros in the 64th minute, received a foul in the box by Daniele Rugani. In principle, the referee did not call the infraction; but after the intervention of the VAR the foul was reviewed and the penalty was awarded. Gerard Moreno, brought on 14 minutes earlier by Giovani Lo Celso, scored the penalty goal despite Szczęsny’s effort.

From there, it was all out of control for Juventus, and Villarreal took advantage of it. At minute 85, after a corner from the right, Pau Torres appeared only at the far post to push the ball and stretch the advantage, which Danjuma ended up sentencing with another penalty for a handball by Matthijs de Ligt.

The final score was 3-0 in Turin and Villarreal eliminated Juventus to get into the quarterfinals of the Champions League. Now they will wait for the draw to determine their rival between Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid, Liverpool, Benfica, and Chelsea.
