Sporting de Portugal managed to resist the constant siege of Manchester City in the second leg of the round of 16 of the Champions League. Those led by Pep Guardiola dominated at will against the Portuguese champion, who was very brave in the second half where they even came close to winning. Manchester City takes advantage of the income from the first leg to go through to the quarterfinals.

This match at times seemed more like a friendly game or training match than a second leg match of the Champions League round of 16.

The 0-5 in the first leg was noticeable from the moment the line-ups of both teams were announced. Guardiola gave the alternative to Egan-Riley, a 19-year-old who had barely played a previous game with the Citizens, in the League Cup in September.

Manchester City had three clear chances throughout the game. The first fell on Sterling’s boots, but he couldn’t beat Adan’s heads-up.

In this first half, both teams tried in bursts, but they did not manage to score a goal, nor did they put enough effort into making the ball end up entering their rival’s goal.

Second Half

The second half had to be different since Manchester City began with everything. At minute 47, Gabriel Jesús got the first goal for his team, but sadly for him, the VAR had a word with it, indicating that the Brazilian was offside.

Rúben Amorim took Sarabia off the field and put Edwards in. His team noticed the improvement instantly and began to arrive with much more danger in the Manchester City area. An area first defended by Ederson and then by the veteran Carson, who Guardiola gave 20 minutes in his goal.

Just as the veteran English goalkeeper came in, he saved the 0-1 by narrowing it down perfectly when Paulinho practically sang the goal. In discount time, Stones, after a corner that he finished off alone, and Sterling three meters from the goal lost the opportunity to give Manchester City the victory.

Carson’s last Champions League game was 16 years ago when he was 19 and playing for Liverpool. It is, therefore, the largest difference in time between a match played and another in the largest continental competition.

Manchester City is in the quarterfinals of the Champions League for the fifth time in a row.
