Atlético de Madrid once again dreams of being in the final stages of the UEFA Champions League. Those of Cholo Simeone received Manchester United this Wednesday at the Wanda Metropolitano; to play the first leg of the round of 16, where they finished with a 1-1 draw.

A tie in which Atlético Madrid got an early goal from Joao Félix, who made his debut with his first goal in the Champions League this season.

A very proactive Atlético, as they always do on Champions League nights, was able to control the game from the start; against a very disastrous Manchester United that did not have a good game and was never fully into it; despite achieving the draw.

Atleti started so strong that they managed to get ahead on the scoreboard quickly, in the 7th minute, with a shot by Joao Félix, chosen as the best player of the match, heading in a pass from Lodi that hit the post and from there it went into the goal. Manchester United has responded by trying to get the goal, but they haven’t.

Despite multiple attempts and Cristiano Ronaldo’s protests because the referee has not shown a foul to the rivals who have fouled him when he was running with the ball, halftime came with a score of 1-0.

Second Half

The second half started with a much superior Manchester United, threatening the home area and creating many clear scoring chances, playing much longer in the opposition half.

Seeing this, Cholo Simeone implemented a series of changes that gave him fresh air on the field and Atleti regained strength and possession of the ball. Every minute the game was balanced and both teams attacked looking for the goal that would give them peace of mind or equalize the game.

However, in the 80th minute, Manchester United newcomer Elanga scored the equalizer.

Both teams continued with an incessant attack looking for the goal that would give them victory. Finally, the game ended with equality on the scoreboard.

Who would have deserved it is the least of it, the fact is that Manchester United took the draw. A protagonist was not even a necessity (having CR7 on the field), like Atlético Madrid, which does not have any reference players and has been based on playing a collective game in recent seasons.
