MLS Matchday 11 Roundup

Last Updated on May 6, 2024 2:36 pm by Erwin Noguera

We had such a fun matchday this last weekend, but the favorites did their job, which means that the things at the top of both conferences remained the same after the two teams at the front of each side managed to win and continue on their tight race for the top.

The clash between New York City and Colorado Rapids was quite entertaining, and it allowed one of them to make it to a better spot and the playoffs, at least for now.

Now it is time to start breaking down what took place during the MLS Matchday 11.

We have to admit that this match was simply a showcase to one of the players, as Messi made MLS history, becoming the first player to record five assists in a game and record six-goal contributions in a match during Inter Miami’s 6-2 blowout win.

We have to admit it was, easily,Messi’s best game since he won the World Cup with Argentina in Qatar in 2022, helping Inter score six unanswered goals in a matter of 36 minutes in the second half.

Messi scored in the 50th minute, andInterMiami’s latest addition, Matias Rojas, had a brace with goals scored in the 48th and 62nd minutes. Luis Suárez finished with a hat trick, scoring in the 68th, 75th, and 81st minutes in the victory.

Even with the Red Bulls attacking first due to Dante Vanzeir scoring in the 30th, and Emil Forsberg getting a 2nd one in the added minutes of the 2nd half, they looked outclassed.

Orlando City dropped yet another match at home, this time to FC Cincinnati. Despite the 1-0 loss, a couple of red cards, and the all-too-familiar lack of finishing, the Lions did play pretty well. The issue here is that they continue to give up early goals and can’t find the back of the net.

Cincinnati has won three consecutive games following back-to-back losses to the New York Red Bulls and Montreal.

Acosta slipped behind the defense on the right side and ran onto a long ball played by DeAndre Yedlin before he cut back to evade a pair of defenders and scored from point-blank range to give Cincinnati a 1-0 lead in the opening minute.

That’s somehow all they required, and the match was competitive from both sides, even though no other goal was scored.

Things are looking great for Real Salt Lake, who enjoyed a crucial late winner courtesy of captain Chicho Arango to secure a 1-0 victory against Sporting Kansas City in this match.

This win extends the Claret-and-Cobalt’s active unbeaten run to a league-high seven games and places the team clear at the top of the MLS Western Conference standings. LA Galaxy couldn’t enjoy a victory to keep themselves in the draw at the top.

RSL’s new innovative and exciting tactical approach this season was on display throughout the encounter for all to see.

It was due to this approach that we saw the team set up and start in a 4-2-3-1 structure before morphing into a 3-2-4-1 formation in possession, with Alex Katranis lodging up higher up on the left wing and having the freedom of the entire left flank.

RSL eventually got the goal from a perfectly-taken set piece in the 81st minute. A ball floated into the box from a Brayan Vera freekick found Arango at the far post. The striker guided a powerful header off the ground and into the back of the net to establish the lead.

They just continued to play through and see things end in their favor to score the 3 points they needed.

This was all Colorado’s day right here, as Rafael Navarro managed to score early and get the lead, with Cole Bassett getting an assist and a late goal. They also allowed Zack Steffen to get his first clean sheet with Colorado as they beat New York City FC for the first time at a rainy Citi Field 2-0.

The Rapids grabbed the lead in the 16th minute and held it until halftime on a goal by Navarro. Bassett and Kévin Cabral set up Navarro’s fifth goal this season: a right-footed shot from the left side of the box to the top right corner of the net.

Bassett provided some insurance in the 86th minute when he used an assist from Calvin Harris, who subbed in for Omir Fernández in the 69th minute, to score his fourth goal.

Steffen, who has started every match in his first season with the Rapids, finished with three saves in his first shutout with the club, making short work of a New York City team that couldn’t shine here.
