Austrian soccer champion RB Salzburg was on the verge of springing a surprise in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League round of 16 on Wednesday, but Bayern managed to draw level with a late 1-1 equalizer thanks to a goal by Frenchman Kingsley Coman in the 90th minute.

Without a doubt, the match was a contest for Bayern to win, as they were the clear favorites to take the victory.

The start of the match was marked by very active play by both teams, who developed good scoring chances. In the 11th minute, the Austrian team’s Swiss striker Noah Okafor was forced to leave the game with a right thigh injury. He was replaced by Junior Adamu, a youngster from the Salzburg youth academy.

Just 10 minutes later, Salzburg’s Nigerian striker scored the goal that gave his team the lead with a right-footed shot past Bayern goalkeeper Ulreich from Adeyemi’s pass.

The rest of the first half saw several more chances for the home team, but also some dangerous arrivals for the Germans. Bayern came out after the break stronger and more determined. Bayern tried again and again to penetrate Salzburg’s area, especially the flank of Coman, who caused a lot of danger and cornered the home side.

But shortly after, the home side came close to scoring a second goal to give them the definitive lead and the peace of mind, but neither Adeyemi nor Adamu could beat Ulreich on a counterattack that Bayern saved under the goal.

Bayern could not find the necessary formula to score the equalizing goal, so they moved their pieces trying to generate a positive change in the team and thus, manage to tie the game.

Bayern continued to dominate the game and tried to attack from all sides of the field, but the tight defense of Salzburg did not allow the Germans to equalize.

When the almost 30,000 spectators who watched the game already thought they had enjoyed a historic victory for Salzburg, a Pavard cross arrived, leaving Coman in the area in the perfect position to score the equalizer in the 90th minute.

Finally, Bayern managed to get a difficult draw in this game, something unexpected for them, since they came to this match with the confidence of achieving a comfortable victory.
