The Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters is one of the most prestigious tournaments on the ATP Tour and the first major clay-court event of the season. Held annually in April at the Monte Carlo Country Club in the picturesque surroundings of Monaco, this Masters 1000 event attracts the best men’s tennis players from around the world.
First held in 1897, the Monte Carlo Masters has a long and storied history. Past champions include tennis legends such as Bjorn Borg, Ivan Lendl, Mats Wilander, Gustavo Kuerten, Juan Carlos Ferrero, and Rafael Nadal. The tournament is currently sponsored by Rolex and offers total prize money of more than 5.9 million euros.
Played on clay courts (red clay), the Monte Carlo Masters is the only significant clay tournament played before the French Open (Roland Garros) at the end of May. The Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters 2024 will be held April 7-14 at the Monte-Carlo Country Club in Monte-Carlo, Monaco. The total financial commitment is €6,410,670.
The tournament takes place on the clay courts of the Monte-Carlo Country Club, where the world’s best players will compete for the prestigious Masters 1000 title. The country club is known for its beautiful location overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. In addition, the main stadium court at the venue is the Rainier III Court, which has a capacity of over 10,000 spectators.
The defending champion is 26-year-old Russian Andrey Rublev. Rublev won his first Masters 1000 title in Monte Carlo last year, defeating 20-year-old Holger Rune of Denmark 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 in the final.
Rublev was ranked eighth in the world at the time of his victory. He had previously reached the Monte Carlo quarterfinals in 2020 and the semifinals in 2021. The title marked Rublev’s 11th career ATP title and easily the biggest of his career so far. Right now, the Russian will be looking to defend his first Masters 1000 crown against a stacked field in 2024.
