2024 Valspar Championship Preview and Free Pick

Last Updated on March 19, 2024 12:32 pm by Erwin Noguera

The 2024 Valspar Championship begins this week at the beautiful Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort near Tampa, Florida. This PGA Tour event was first held in 2000, originally, as the Tampa Bay Classic. Since then, it has become one of the most popular stops on the Florida Swing, with a star-studded field competing for an $8.4 million purse. The tournament will be held on March 21-24, 2024.

The Copperhead course is slightly longer than 7300 yards and has a par 71 layout. It has small, undulating greens, challenging dog legs, and fairways hemmed in by trees.  Accuracy from the outset is paramount here, as the course rewards precision rather than power.  Bermuda’s championship greens are some of the most challenging on Tour, requiring players to be accurate with their approach shots.

The Valspar Championship offers fans an up-close look at many of the game’s best golfers, like world No. 1 Xander Schauffele. Past champions include Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, Sam Burns, and Sungjae Im. This year’s edition looks to be another exciting tournament showcasing the talent and shooting skills of the best in the world.

2024 Valspar Championship: The Course

The Valspar Championship has been held at the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Golf Resort in Palm Harbor, Florida, since the tournament’s establishment in 2000. The par 71 course was designed by Larry Packard and measures 7,340 yards.

The Copperhead course is renowned for its difficult greens, elevation variations, and fairways bordered by trees.  On many holes, strategic bunkering and water hazards are relevant considerations. Accuracy off the tee is more important on this course than yardage.

Two of the Copperhead course’s most famous holes are the par 3-13th and par 4-16th. The 13th hole features an island green and requires a well-struck mid-iron to find the putting surface. The 16th is nicknamed the “Snake Pit” and plays 443 yards with an uphill approach to a well-guarded green. Finding the regulation green here this weekend could be the difference between winning and losing the tournament.

2024 Valspar Championship – Betting picks

Heading into the 2024 Valspar Championship, several strong contenders could take home the title.  However, based on his recent form and success at Copperhead, our prediction for the winner is Xander Schauffele.

Schauffele has played one of the best games of his career of late, with a win this season at the 2024 THE PLAYERS Championship. His precision iron play and scrambling ability are well suited to the narrow, tree-lined fairways of the Copperhead Course.

In addition, Schauffele finished T2 at Valspar in 2018, proving he can go low on this course. His combination of accuracy, short-game skills, and putting make him my pick to finish at the top of the leaderboard.

Likewise, contenders like Sam Burns, Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth, and Tony Finau can be very tough bones to crack for the current #1 in the PGA Tour world rankings and are candidates for the podium.
