Hero World Challenge 2023 Preview and Free Pick

Last Updated on November 29, 2023 11:10 am by Erwin Noguera

The Hero World Challenge is a golf tournament organized by Tiger Woods, which takes place each December. It features a small number (currently 20) of top-ranked golf pros. The event is a benefit for the Tiger Woods Foundation, and is part of the PGA Tour schedule, but does not offer FedEx Cup points or official money as it is an unofficial competition.

Initially, the tournament had a 16-man field composed of the defending champion, the top 11 available players from the Official World Golf Ranking, and four sponsor exemptions chosen by the Tiger Woods Foundation.

In 2008, the field increased to 18 players, consisting of the most recent winners of the four major PGA tournaments, the top 11 available players from the Official World Golf Ranking, the defending champion, and two exemption players selected by the foundation.

Event Overview – Hero World Challenge – 2023 – PGA Golf Tour

While not an official PGA Tour event, the Hero is still a fun event to watch, and of course, there is money to be made, both for the players and bettors. Only 20 players received the invite to this Tiger Woods-hosted event so, obviously, there is no cut.

Unless you live under a rock, the big news this week is that Tiger is not only hosting but making his return to golf, his first start since the Masters back in April. He says he is having no pain in his ankle, which he fused shortly after the Masters, and Albany Golf Club is a perfect track for him to return.

Also in the field this week is Viktor Hovland, who is vying for a three-peat, along with world #1 Scottie Scheffler, who has finished runner-up to Hovland each of the last two years.

Another exciting name to watch is Will Zalatoris, who just like Tiger, makes his return from injury after having back surgery following a withdrawal from the Masters before hitting a shot.

The course is relatively flat, so it will be an easy walk for the 82-time PGA Tour winner. Ernie Els designed the par 72 track, which measures a little over 7,400 yards. The course has five par 5s and five par 3s and features big dunes all over the links-style layout.

Being on the islands, the biggest defense for the course is the wind. This week, the wind will be average for the area, blowing 10-20 mph all four days. All four days look nearly identical, with temperatures in the low 80s, average wind, and no rain in sight.
