WM Phoenix Open 2024 Preview and Free Pick

Last Updated on February 5, 2024 7:34 pm by Erwin Noguera

The PGA Tour continues its tour of the United States and now arrives in Phoenix, Arizona, to play the WM Phoenix Open, which has a purse of 8.1 million dollars, of which 1.5 million are for the winner.

This competition has been held since 1932, so it has a rich history to review. Four sportsmen have tasted the sweetness of success three times and they are Arnold Palmer, Gene Littler, Mark Calcavecchia, and Phil Mickelson.

These names add luster to the competition, which in its last two editions has had Scottie Scheffler as champion, who beat American Patrick Cantlay in 2022 and Canadian Nick Taylor in 2023.

WM Phoenix Open 2024 Favorites

However, in the TPC Scottsdale field, the great favorite is the experienced 37-year-old Patton Kizzire, who has been a professional since 2014. Throughout his career, he has been champion twice, the first time at the OHL Classic at Mayakoba in 2017 and the second at the Sony Open in Hawaii in 2018.

Precisely, Kizzire had a good participation in the last Sony Open this year, placing 13th. In Arizona, he may have a great opportunity to end that bad streak without being able to shout champion in a sport as challenging as golf.

If Kizzire has a great opportunity because of his experience, the second in the ranking is the 21-year-old Ryo Hisatsune, a professional from Japan.

He has been competing at the elite level since 2020 and currently has his best ranking, occupying 72nd place in the world. His best triumph was in September last year, when he won the Cazoo Open de France, beating the Englishman Jordan Smith and the Norwegian Jeff Winther.

Afterwards, he was champion three times in the Asian Challenge, so now he hopes to take the big leap and start getting more relevant competitions in the panorama.

If we have to talk about a golfer with many in the scene, that is Ryan Palmer, who has been a professional since 2000. In his career, his greatest successes were the Funai Classic in 2004, the Ginn Sur Mer Classic in 2008, the Sony Open in 2010, and for the last time, he shouted champion in 2019, celebrating the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

His best participation in a major was fifth place in the PGA Championship, but it was in 2014, 10 years ago. Last year, he was unable to compete in any of the four most important tournaments on the circuit.

At 33 years old, the Swedish golfer Alexander Bjork has the greatest achievement in his sports career, winning the Volvo China Open, beating the Spanish Adrian Otaegui in the definition. But this was in 2018, several years ago.

In 2023, he obtained the quota to play in The Open Championship, finishing 41st. That has been his best participation in a major.

Finally, we must talk about the American Julian Suri, who came to professionalism in 2016. His triumphs have been on the European Tour, but in 2018, he had the merit of being in the Top 20 of the PGA Championship.
