Tyler Wright is a professional surfer born in Culburra Beach, New South Wales, Australia, on March 31, 1994. Wright was a consecutive world champion in the 2016 and 2017 WSL.
Wright was introduced to the world of surfing when she was a young girl. Her brothers and her parents have always been lovers of surfing, in which surfing was instilled as a way of life in her family. Wright did not disappoint; from the beginning, she was classified as a surfing prodigy. Her older brother was a professional surfer, and was her main motivation and role model.
In 2008, when she was only 14 years old, she surfed as a Wildcard, becoming the youngest surfer in history to win a Championship Tour event at the Beachley Classic tournament in Sydney.
Tyler Wright’s Championship Tour Experience
In 2011, Wright officially entered the Championship Tour full-time, and opened with great participation in the Roxy Pro Finals. She finished in fourth place as a rookie. In 2013, she was runner-up, so it was to be expected that in the following years, her first world championship would come.
In 2014, Wright also finished runner-up, but in 2015, she had a tremendous decline. However, at the end of the season, her attitude changed and she was close to beating the current #1 surfer in the Championship Tour world ranking, Carissa Moore. While all of this was going on, her brother Owen was competing for the men’s CT world championship, but after an accident and suffering a life-threatening brain injury, Tyler’s outlook on surfing changed completely.
After seeing her brother fight for what she loved most in the world, which was surfing, she became more focused on her goal of being the best women’s surfer in the world. This was demonstrated in 2016 when she won 5 events of the season, including her first world title.
Her second world title was just as impressive, but for physical health reasons, everyone thought that Wright would be out of the race after sustaining a terrible injury to one of her knees. However, she pushed and overcame the pain, and achieved an excellent victory in the finals.
At the height of her career, Tyler contracted the flu on a trip to Africa in 2018, which caused her to lose 1 year of competition. But, like her brother Owen, Tyler set out to overcome all barriers and regained her strength. She further proved her surfing abilities by reaching the finals at the Maui 2019 event.
