2024 Rio Open Presented by Claro Preview

Last Updated on February 16, 2024 1:53 pm by Erwin Noguera

The ATP 500 returns to present its second edition of the 2024 season at the Rio Open, where great stars of the sport such as Alcaraz and Cameron Norrie will compete for points on the clay courts of the carnival city.

The event will take place from February 19 to 25, celebrating its tenth edition since its inauguration in 2014 (not held in 2021 due to COVID), hosted at the Jockey Club Brasileiro.

The total prize money amounts to $2,271,715, while the champion in singles will pocket a sum close to $400,000. Likewise, and as the name of the event indicates, 500 ATP Tour points will be given to the winner.

Cameron Norrie comes in as the defending champion, and it will be Alcaraz, who was the other finalist at the time, who on paper will present the biggest challenge to repeat the title. Other names that jump out are Argentina’s Cerundolo, who has been progressively climbing the rankings, and Chile’s Jarry. As expected, the LATAM contenders will be closely watched at this local event.

Carlos Alcaraz

With two Grand Slams, four Masters 1000, and six other ATP Tour level titles, the Spanish mission this season is to retake the number one place in the world rankings, although it won’t be easy. As said before, the last time he played in the clay courts of Rio he reached the final, losing to Norrie.

Cameron Norrie

The South-Africa-born Englishman has reached the number 8th previously as a career-high and has won five ATP level titles including a Masters 1000 and Indian Wells. He comes as the defending champion.

Nicolas Jarry

With three titles in ATP Tour singles tournaments and two in doubles, Jarry is the highest-ranked LATAM player in the ATP tour ranking and comes as the favorite from the region to take the crown.
