The Champions League kicks off in 2026 with Matchday 7 of the group stage, the penultimate round, which could begin to determine who advances and who is eliminated.

Arsenal lead the competition with a perfect record, and to maintain it, they face a very tough test away against Inter, who are eager to hold on to their privileged position.

Bayern, sitting second, will have a slightly easier task when they host USG, who need a win or could be eliminated.

Meanwhile, Spain’s two giants are not enjoying the competition. Real Madrid is in better shape but must defeat Monaco to remain among the direct qualifiers, while Barcelona needs to beat Slavia Praha away from home and hope several results go their way if they are to break into the top eight.

Real Madrid are seventh with 12 points, level with the team in ninth place but ahead on goal difference. Anything other than a win could push them out of the direct qualification spots for the next round and send them into the playoffs. They have recorded four wins and two losses, the most recent coming at home against Manchester City (1-2). They have already faced another French club, Marseille, and managed only a narrow 2–1 win with both goals coming from the penalty spot. On top of that, the atmosphere around Álvaro Arbeloa does not appear to be the best.

Monaco is also walking a tightrope. They sit 19th with nine points, three clear of Benfica in 25th, who are already in the elimination zone. They lost only their opening match and have since picked up two wins and three draws. In Ligue 1, however, their recent form has been poor, losing their last four outings. Key players such as Paul Pogba, Takumi Minamino, and Lukáš Hrádecký are injured.

Last season’s Champions League saw these teams meet in the same phase and at the same stadium, and Inter won 1–0 with a penalty goal.
