The only NFL game Madrid has ever staged finished 16-13 in overtime. The total on Sunday’s game is 52.5.

That is the highest number on the Week 9 board, up four points from its 48.5 open, and 23.5 points above what the Santiago Bernabéu actually produced last year when Miami beat Washington in the city’s inaugural game in front of 78,610 people.

And the market and the model disagree about the result by more than they disagree about any other game this week. Stripping the vig, Cincinnati are a 60.4% proposition. ESPN’s FPI has them at 77.3%. Isso é um 16.9-point gap, four times the threshold at which we committed, on Monday, to taking the model rather than arguing with it.

Atlanta are the designated home team. They are 1-3 at home this season, and this week home is on the other side of an ocean.

Cincinnati are 5-2 with a plus-forty-eight point differential. Atlanta are 3-5 at minus eighteen.

The line has moved a point toward Cincinnati since Tuesday, from -162 to -170, which is a single point of implied probability. The total has not moved since Tuesday and has not come down from the four-point jump it made off its open.

The Venue, and the Only Precedent

This is Madrid’s second NFL game, not its first; a distinction worth making because the first one is the only data anybody has about what this building does to a football match.

Last year’s inaugural game: Miami 16, Washington 13, in overtime. 78,610 in attendance. Organisers expect around 80,000 on Sunday.

Tickets ran from €93.40 to €438.75, all-in including fees, with a cap of six per account through an NFL Ticketmaster account. General admission went on sale on July 9 after VIP sales opened in June.

And the Bernabéu is listed by ESPN as an indoor venue. The stadium’s retractable roof means weather is not a variable in a 52.5 total, which is part of why that number is where it is. The Associated Press reports organisers expect the playing surface to be in “mint” condition, with an NFL field laid over the pitch.

The relevant caution is that a 29-point game is the entire history of American football in this stadium. One result is not a sample. It is also the only thing anybody can point to.

The Disagreement Is the Largest We Have Recorded

No-vig, the market makes Cincinnati 60.4%. The model makes them 77.3%.

On Tuesday, the gap was 18.0 points. The line has since moved one point toward Cincinnati, and the gap is now 16.9. It is still, by a distance, the largest model-market disagreement on any game we have looked at this season. The previous high was 8.1 points on Tampa Bay at Chicago, in the same week.

On Monday, after going one for four in Week 8 and admitting we had published a caveat and bet against it for the third time, we wrote a rule: when the model and the market disagree by more than four points, we take the model, or we pass.

This is the clearest application that rule is ever likely to get. The market is pricing a close game with three points of cushion. The model is pricing a rout.

And the underlying numbers side with the model. Cincinnati scores 29.43 points a game, second in the NFL behind Buffalo. Joe Burrow leads the league with 20 passing touchdowns at a 73.0% completion rate and a 111.6 passer rating, and last Sunday he threw for 462 yards in a 43-36 overtime win over Tennessee, with Tee Higgins catching ten passes for 155.

Atlanta were shut out 16-0 by a Tampa Bay side that did not complete a single pass. Michael Penix Jr. went 8 of 24 for 125 yards. Bijan Robinson, who leads the league with 780 rushing yards, was held to 76 on nineteen carries.

Atlanta Are the Home Team, and It Means Nothing

The Falcons carry the designation, the locker room, and the ticketing. They do not carry a crowd.

Atlanta are 1-3 at home this season and 2-2 on the road, which is the inverse of the usual split and a reasonable argument that home advantage has not been doing much for them in Georgia either.

At a genuinely neutral site, the designation is paperwork. What Atlanta actually get is the same transatlantic flight Cincinnati get, the same unfamiliar surface, and a kick-off at 3:30 in the afternoon local time, which is 9:30 in the morning on the American east coast and 6:30 in the morning in the Pacific time zone.

Neither team has an edge in the travel, and both have the same body-clock problem. That is the honest read on the international-game variable: it is noise applied equally, not an advantage.

The Total Is the Harder Question Than the Side

52.5 is the highest number of the week, ahead of Dallas at Indianapolis and Las Vegas at San Francisco, both at 51.5.

Here is the arithmetic that makes us hesitate. Cincinnati averages 29.43 points and Atlanta averages 21.38. Add them, and you get 50.81. The market has set the total 1.69 above the two teams’ combined scoring averages, which is a reasonable place to put it, and is also the market assuming both offences perform at their season rate.

One of them has not. Atlanta scored nothing last week. Their 21.38 average comes from 171 points across eight games, and the most recent entry in that total is a zero.

Against that: Cincinnati concede 22.57 a game and Atlanta concede 23.63. Neither defence is good enough to justify an under on reputation, and the roof removes the one variable (wind, rain, cold) that reliably drags November totals down.

We lean under, with low confidence, and the reason is the four-point move off the open rather than anything about the teams. A total that opens at 48.5 and is bet to 52.5 in a week, for a game in a building with one 29-point precedent, is a number that has travelled on enthusiasm.

O que faríamos

Cincinnati is on the spread, and we are taking it because of the rule rather than in spite of it.

A 16.9-point model-market gap is not a margin you argue with. Three points on a team scoring 29.43 a game against a team that was shut out last Sunday is the softest number on the Week 9 board. We would take the spread rather than the -170 moneyline, because -170 asks for 63% on a projection that says 77%.

The under on 52.5, at half stakes. Four points of movement off the open, the only comparable game in this stadium producing 29 points, and one of the two offences coming off a shutout. It is the lower-conviction half of the position, and we are sizing it that way.

And the thing we are not betting on is the occasion. Second NFL game in Spain, 80,000 expected, a retractable roof and a pitch covered over for the weekend; none of it tells you who wins. The travel is symmetrical, the surface is new to both, and the kick-off is early for everybody.

Cincinnati are the better team by forty-eight points of margin, and the model says so twice as emphatically as the market does. That is the whole bet.
