Neither of these teams has ever won a MBL World Series.

Milwaukee have won once, in 1982, in the Robin Yount and Paul Molitor era. Tampa Bay have been twice, in 2008 and 2020. One of those droughts ends inside the next ten days.

And the man who pitched Tampa Bay here will face the team that used to employ him. Freddy Peralta was named ALCS MVP on Monday after going 2-0 with a 0.75 ERA across three appearances, and the Rays acquired him at the trade deadline. He spent years in Milwaukee.

The Rays beat Cleveland 7-3 in Game 6 to take the American League pennant 4-2. The Brewers swept the two-time defending champions in four. Game 1 is Friday night in Milwaukee.

These were the two best regular-season teams in their respective MLB leagues, and they both held a first-round bye. That is a rarer outcome than it sounds; in a format built to let a 500-1 shot into the Championship Series, the top seeds have met at the end.

Milwaukee hold home-field advantage because World Series home field goes to the better regular-season record, which is the same rule we explained when the Yankees were being penalised by the bye structure in the Division Series. Here it has rewarded the right team.

The Odds

William Contreras leads the World Series MVP market.

Milwaukee has been as short as this only because of what they just did.Six days ago they were at 45%. Eight days ago they were at 33%. The sweep of the Dodgers moved them more than any single result has moved any price this postseason.

And the longer view is the one worth keeping. When spring training was winding down, Milwaukee were priced at 3.3% to win the World Series. They are now a 63% favourite to do it.

Freddy Peralta Against the Team He Came From

This is the story of the series, and it was not available to anybody in February.

Peralta was named ALCS MVP after two starts and a relief appearance: 2-0, a 0.75 ERA, six scoreless innings in Game 2, out of the bullpen in Game 4, and one run across 5⅓ innings in the Game 6 clincher.

Tampa Bay acquired him from the Mets at the trade deadline. Before that, he was a Brewer, and on Friday he walks into American Family Field as the opposition.

For Tampa Bay, the deadline logic is now obvious. A low-payroll club bought a starter in July, and that starter has pitched them to the Fall Classic. For Milwaukee, it is the one matchup problem on the board they cannot coach around: the opposing ace knows the building, the catcher and the lineup.

How Milwaukee Got Here

The best record in baseball, a first-round bye, and then a sweep of the team everyone had backed since February.

The Dodgers series was closer than 4-0 suggests at the top and not close at all at the bottom. Milwaukee won the two in Milwaukee by 2-1 and 7-4, then went to Los Angeles and won 6-2 and 6-4, against a rotation that started Tarik Skubal and Yoshinobu Yamamoto in the first two games.

Los Angeles scored five runs across the opening pair and never recovered.Shohei Ohtani finished the series slashing .150/.261/.150, a slugging percentage identical to his batting average, meaning no extra-base hits at all.

Milwaukee also get the longer rest, having finished their series before Tampa Bay finished theirs. Expect the rust-versus-rest argument all week; the gap is a handful of days, not a fortnight.

How Tampa Bay Got Here

They swept the Yankees, then came back from 2-1 down against Cleveland to win three straight.

The ALDS was the statement: New York won 93 games with the best run differential in the American League and Tampa Bay held them to five runs across a three-game sweep, including a 1-0 shutout in Game 1.

The ALCS was the recovery. They lost Game 1 at home 7-3, lost Game 3 in Cleveland, and then won three consecutive games to close it out, two of them in Cleveland.

The offence is the part that changed.Jonathan Aranda, Yandy Díaz and Junior Caminero carried the back half of the series, com Díaz and Caminero both hitting two-run home runs in the 7-3 clincher.

And the payroll context matters. Tampa Bay has reached three World Series on consistently one of the smallest budgets in the sport. This is the second-smallest-market Fall Classic in recent memory and both teams built it the same way.

Where We Were Right, and Where We Were Not

Two weeks ago we wrote that Milwaukee at 45% were “the correct favourite and probably a slightly short price.” They swept the Dodgers and are now at 63%. The side was right; the “short price” caveat was wrong in the direction that costs you least.

On Monday, we wrote that Milwaukee at 62% was “the correct price and we are not going to repeat last week’s mistake by arguing against it.” We held that line. We also wrote that “Tampa Bay at 32% is the live side of this board” and that if they closed it out, 32% “is a defensible number rather than a cheap one.” They closed it out, and the market moved them to 38%. And we called Cleveland at 7% “the least likely of the three outcomes, and for once that is exactly what the price says.” Cleveland lost Game 6.

That is three from three on Monday, after a month of misses, and the reason is worth naming: we stopped arguing with the market.

The miss that still stands is the Dodgers. We argued at length that 22% was too long on a team with three home games and Blake Snell available. They lost all three at home and the series in four. We had written the correct read in the same article, that the problem was the offence, not the pitching, and then built a contrarian case on venue anyway.

And the Cleveland thread closes at three wrong calls out of three. We said their September run would not survive a +3 run differential, then called their bye a structural advantage, then said the White Sox’s +45 differential “was the number that mattered all along.” They won the division, came back from 0-2 against Chicago, and pushed the American League’s best team to six games. Run differential was the wrong instrument for that team every single time.

O veredicto

Milwaukee at 63% is the right side, and we are not going to talk ourselves out of it twice in one month. The best record in baseball, a bye, a sweep of the two-time defending champions, home-field advantage, and the longer rest.

Tampa Bay at 38% is not a bad price. They have the series MVP of the round they just won, that pitcher knows Milwaukee intimately, and they have already beaten a 93-win Yankees side by holding them to five runs in three games. A 38% underdog with the opposing team’s former ace starting Game 1 or 2 is a live position, not a lottery ticket.

The one number to hold on to:Milwaukee were 3.3% in March and are 63% now. Tampa Bay were not on anyone’s board at all. Neither of these franchises has ever won this, and one of them is about to.
