Seven Western Conference clubs are separated by four points, and only two will make the playoffs.
Decision Day is Saturday, November 7. Every club has roughly eight matches left of a 34-game MLS season, and the two conferences are telling completely different stories: the East has a runaway leader and a settled top four, while the West has a logjam from eighth place down to fourteenth.
Here is exactly what is still on the table.

The Format, Because It Matters More Than Usual
The top nine teams in each conference qualify; not eight.
The eighth and ninth seeds meet in a single-match Wild Card round on November 18, hosted by the higher seed. The seven clubs above them go straight into the Conference Quarterfinals, a best-of-three series. MLS Cup is Friday 18 December.
So the line that ends a season is between ninth and tenth, and the reward for finishing seventh rather than eighth is skipping a one-off elimination game. That distinction is more worthy than any other prize still available outside the Shield.

Nashville Are Running Away With the Shield
Fifty-seven points, a +32 goal difference, and an eight-point lead over the next-best team in the league.
We ranked Nashville first in our power rankings a month ago on the basis that they were the most complete team in MLS and, crucially, that they had almost nobody unavailable. That has held. Seventeen wins from 26 with 53 scored and 21 conceded is Shield-winning form, and it has not wobbled.
Vancouver, at 49 points from 25 matches, is the only realistic challenger, and its +33 goal difference is actually the best in the league: one better than Nashville’s, from a game fewer. Fifty-six scored and 23 conceded is the most efficient record in MLS.
The Shield matters beyond the trophy. It guarantees home advantage throughout the playoffs, and in a best-of-three quarterfinal format that is a concrete edge rather than a ceremonial one.
The East Is Already Sorted at the Top
Nashville, New England, Miami and Charlotte are effectively safe. Four clubs on 43 points or more with eight to play, and the fifth-placed team is four points back.
New England at 46 are the quiet story. We flagged them once before, after we left them out of a table entirely (third on 40 at the time), and they have kept going. A +12 goal difference from 45 scored and 33 conceded is not spectacular, but 14 wins from 26 with only four draws is a team that converts performances into points.
Miami are level on 46 with the most goals in MLS: 63. They have also conceded 48, the fourth-worst total among the East’s playoff contenders. That is the most watchable team in the league and the least predictable in a one-off game.
Chicago in fifth have a match in hand on everyone above them and are the club best placed to disrupt the top four.
The West Is the Real Story
Four points separate eighth from fourteenth. Seven clubs. Two places.
LA Galaxy hold eighth on 33 points but have played 27 matches; more than anyone in the conference. That is the worst position to be in: a lead built on games already spent.
Portland (32 from 26) and Seattle (32 from 25) are level on points below them, and Seattle have two matches in hand on the Galaxy. On current form, Seattle are the side most likely to climb, simply because they have the most football left to play.
San Diego (31), Austin (30), Real Salt Lake (29) and Minnesota (29) are all alive. San Diego’s goal difference of exactly zero is the best in that group; Austin’s -12 is the worst by a distance.
Above them, second through sixth is its own fight. Houston, St. Louis and Dallas are all on 44, San Jose on 42, and LAFC on 41 with 27 played. LAFC have the best goal difference of the five at +14 and the fewest goals conceded in the conference outside Vancouver, which suggests they belong higher than sixth.
What Each Group Is Actually Playing For
Nashville and Vancouver: the Supporters’ Shield and home advantage through December.
New England, Miami, Charlotte, Houston, St. Louis, Dallas, San Jose, and LAFC: seeding, and specifically avoiding eighth. Finishing seventh means a best-of-three series. Finishing eighth means a single-elimination match first.
Chicago, Philadelphia, Orlando, Colorado: securing a top-seven place rather than falling into the Wild Card.
RBNY, Cincinnati, NYC, LA Galaxy, Portland, Seattle, San Diego, Austin, RSL, Minnesota: the two Wild Card places in each conference, and survival.
D.C. United, Toronto, Columbus, Atlanta, Montréal in the East and Sporting Kansas City in the West are realistically finished. Sporting are on 18 points with a -34 goal difference, the worst record in MLS.
Three Numbers Worth Watching
Games in hand, not points. Seattle on 32 from 25 are in better shape than the Galaxy on 33 from 27. In a run-in this tight, the fixture list decides more than form.
Goal difference among the strugglers. Orlando are seventh on 34 points with a -14 goal difference; the same as eighth-placed RBNY. Two clubs currently in playoff spots are being outscored by fourteen goals across a season. Neither profile survives a best-of-three against Nashville.
And the gap between the conferences. The East’s fourth-placed team has 43 points; the West’s has 44. But the East’s ninth has 33 and the West’s ninth has 32. The West is deeper in the middle and thinner at the top, which is why Vancouver’s +33 from 25 games looks more impressive than the points column suggests.
What Comes Next
Eight matches. Decision Day on Saturday 7 November. An eleven-day pause for the FIFA window, then Wild Card matches on 18 November.
Nashville will almost certainly take the Shield. Vancouver will almost certainly win the West. Everything between third and fourteenth in the Western Conference is genuinely unresolved, and four points is not a gap; it is a rounding error with eight games to play.
