The NFL plays its first regular-season game in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday, and it has given the fixture to two 1-1 teams who both need it. Baltimore arrives off a home defeat to New Orleans as 8.5-point favorites. Dallas arrives off Dak Prescott’s four-touchdown afternoon and a franchise record. The total, at 52.5, is the highest on the board.

Two weeks in, the league has split neatly: eight teams are 2-0, eight are 0-2, and the remaining sixteen are level. The unbeaten group includes Buffalo, Kansas City, Seattle, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Cincinnati, Minnesota, and a Las Vegas side nobody is discussing. The winless group includes the Chargers, who have lost twice at home, and a Houston team that has scored six points in its last outing.

Monday night carries the week’s biggest story. Chicago, who scored 59 points in Week 1 and three in Week 2, host Philadelphia with Tyson Bagent expected to start after Caleb Williams was carted off against Minnesota.

NFL Week 3: Ravens vs. Cowboys

The league’s first game in Rio is also the highest-scoring fixture on the board by four points, and the two teams have arrived at that number from opposite directions. Dallas put 37 on Washington with Prescott going 26-of-31 for four touchdowns to pass Tony Romo’s franchise record of 248, and CeeDee Lamb catching eight for 153. Baltimore lost 24-17 at home to New Orleans, conceding 15 unanswered points in the fourth quarter after leading the whole afternoon.

Neither team has a home field here, and that matters more than the 2.5 points suggest. Baltimore has the better roster and are being asked to prove it on a neutral surface a week after a performance that raised real questions about how they close games. Dallas is playing with more confidence than at any point this season. A 52.5 total in a game neither side has prepared for in familiar conditions feels high, but both offences have shown they can reach it.

Prediction: Ravens 27-24 Cowboys

NFL Week 3: Chargers vs. Bills

Buffalo opened their new stadium with Josh Allen throwing five touchdowns in a 41-31 win over Detroit, a game that produced 72 points: nineteen more than the total we said was too high. The Bills are 2-0 and scoring at will. The Chargers are 0-2 after losing at home to Arizona and then to Las Vegas, producing exactly fourteen points in each.

The line has already moved from -6.5 to -7, through the most important key number in football, which tells you where the money has gone. Los Angeles got Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt back this season and hired two new coordinators, and the offence has still managed 28 points in two home games. Asking that group to keep pace in Orchard Park with Allen playing like this is a lot. The 50.5 total is the interesting side: Buffalo will score, and the question is whether the Chargers can contribute enough to reach it.

Prediction: Bills 31-20 Chargers

NFL Week 3: Rams vs. Broncos

Los Angeles answered their Melbourne defeat emphatically, beating the Giants 28-6 on Monday night with Matthew Stafford throwing for 327 yards and four touchdowns and Davante Adams catching eight for 195. Denver is 1-1, having come from ten points down in the fourth quarter to beat Jacksonville 20-13, with Bo Nix going 22-of-31 for 288.

Two and a half points is a small number for a team that just won by 22, and the reason is the venue. Mile High remains the hardest road environment in the conference, and Denver’s fourth quarter against the Jaguars was the best twelve minutes either team has played this season. Myles Garrett is still out for the Rams, which is the fact we flagged in Week 1, and which has not changed. Los Angeles is the better side; getting them at only -2.5 in Denver is the market being honest about the altitude rather than the teams.

Prediction: Broncos 24-23 Rams

NFL Week 3: Eagles vs. Bears

The most consequential injury of the season so far defines this game. Caleb Williams was carted off against Minnesota in a 9-3 defeat, and Tyson Bagent is in line to start. Chicago scored 59 points in Week 1 and three in Week 2, and the difference between those two afternoons is quarterback. Philadelphia is 2-0 after Jalen Hurts needed a nine-play, 65-yard drive in the closing seconds to beat Tennessee 24-20.

The 43.5 total is the tell. Books have priced this as a low-scoring game because they expect Chicago to run the ball and shorten it, which is the correct plan with a backup quarterback against a Philadelphia front. The spread sitting beyond a field goal reflects the same reasoning. Philadelphia have not been convincing (they needed a late drive to beat a 0-2 team), but they do not need to be against this version of the Bears.

Prediction: Eagles 23-13 Bears

Chiefs -10 at Miami is the largest spread of the week, with Kansas City 2-0 after an overtime win and the Dolphins 0-2 and beaten by 22 in San Francisco.

Bengals at Steelers is the division game worth watching Cincinnati are 2-0 and held Houston to six, and Pittsburgh managed three points at New England. Cincinnati are road favourites at -3.5.

Three 0-2 teams host: Tampa Bay against Minnesota, New Orleans against Las Vegas, and Washington against Seattle: the last without Jayden Daniels, who dislocated an elbow for the second time.

Texans at Colts is a 0-2 elimination game in all but name, with Houston favored by just 1.5 on the road.

San Francisco -8.5 over Arizona e Green Bay -7 over Atlanta on Thursday complete the board.
