Liga Betplay Dimayor Season Preview

Last Updated on January 18, 2024 1:15 pm by Erwin Noguera

One month and one week after the end of the Liga Betplay Dimayor for the second semester of 2023, soccer in Colombia returns with several teams that are candidates for the achievement of a new star, especially with clubs that have been assembled in a good way.

Liga Betplay Dimayor – List of candidates

Millonarios

Millonarios, which was champion last year in the first semester, is the longest process in Colombian soccer, starting in 2020 with the mandate of coach Alberto Gamero, who has won two trophies so far.

To win a new title, the ‘Embajador’ signed four reinforcements: goalkeeper Diego Novoa, fullbacks Delvin Alfonzo and Danovis Banguero, and striker Santiago Giordana.

The Argentine Giordana is probably the most striking name of all, and it’s that, in his last year, he scored 22 goals in 32 games with Deportivo Garcilaso, from Peru.

Atletico Nacional

Then there is Atletico Nacional, the most successful team in Colombian soccer and last year’s Colombian Cup winner.

However, their movements in the market were few and without relevant names. Probably the most interesting is defender Bernardo Espinosa, who has extensive experience in Spanish and English soccer.

Right back Joan Castro, midfielder Carlos Sierra, and wingers Edwin Torres and Daniel Mantilla complete the list of names Jhon Bodmer will have at his disposal when looking for new additions to the squad.

Junior

Junior, reigning league champion, is the candidate that closes the podium, mainly because the board was able to keep the squad that defeated Independiente Medellín in the final, especially players such as goalkeeper Santiago Mele, left back Gabriel Fuentes, midfielder Didier Moreno, and forward Carlos Bacca.

There was already quality in the Barranquilla team, but it was able to obtain players with experience in the Colombian National Team, such as midfielder Víctor Cantillo and winger Yimmi Chará.

The only problem that Arturo Reyes’ squad could have is that they have Copa Libertadores on the way, and it could end up being too much.

Águilas Doradas

Although they no longer have Venezuelan coach César Farías, Águilas Doradas can count on the experience of coach Hernán Darío ‘El Bolillo’ Gómez, who has coached in World Cups with Colombia, Ecuador, and Panama.

Uruguayan defender Joaquín Varela and striker Wilfrido De la Rosa were the additions to this institution, which lost its best scorer, veteran Marco Pérez, who signed with Junior.

América de Cali

Águilas also has Libertadores and could be forced to choose between one tournament and another, something that América de Cali could also experience because of the Copa Sudamericana, which added the spice of firing its coach a week before the start of the local competition.

Despite rumors that they will sign Arturo Vidal, the ‘Mechita’ turned the other way and got Venezuelan goalkeeper Joel Graterol, defenders Daniel Bocanegra and Andrés Mosquera Guardia, and skilled winger Michael Barrios.

Liga Betplay Dimayor – Outside Candidates

Finally, we must mention the current runner-up, Independiente Medellín, which signed Pablo Lima, José Aja, Eder Chaux, and Baldomero Perlaza, and Deportes Tolima, which last year came within a hair’s breadth of reaching the final, but collapsed in the last few games and was eliminated.
