Liverpool host West Ham United at Anfield on Wednesday night with the Carabao Cup semi-finals on the line.
Jürgen Klopp’s team are favorites to lift the trophy at Wembley in February as they did in 2022, and with teams like Manchester City and Arsenal already out of the competition, the Reds seem well placed to take the first big piece of silverware in English football this season.
However, West Ham have a habit of giving their best in cup competitions and ruining the hopes of their rivals, whether in Europe or when they eliminated Arsenal with a superb performance last month.
The Hammers come into this match in great form, having beaten the Wolverhampton Wolves and placed eighth in the table, while Liverpool must noticeably improve their performance in the goalless draw against Manchester United.
Ryan Gravenberch is unlikely to play for Liverpool, although the Dutchman is suffering more from fatigue than injury. Harvey Elliott could come into the lineup after a series of impressive performances off the bench.
Klopp may choose to rotate his team as they face Arsenal in the Premier League this weekend. Caoimhin Kelleher is tipped to start in goal, while Jarell Quansah and Cody Gakpo hope to have opportunities to impress.
David Moyes knows that a victory would leave the club as one of the big favorites to win the competition. Jarrod Bowen, Lucas Paquetá and Mohammed Kudus shone against Wolves, and it would be a surprise if they weren’t the front three at Anfield.
Konstantinos Mavropanos could enter the defensive eleven, while Alphonse Areola faces a battle to regain his place in goal from Lukasz Fabianski.
Real Madrid is the only team to have defeated Liverpool at Anfield so far in 2023, while Sunday’s draw against Manchester United ended the streak of 11 consecutive victories that Jürgen Klopp’s men had had at home this season.
West Ham are convinced they can cause Liverpool real problems on the counterattack and are likely to find space to exploit at times. Still, the Reds will be desperate to get back to winning ways and will hopefully offload some of the Frustration of the weekend at the Hammers.
