Brasileirão Serie A Matchday 16 Roundup

Every day that passes in the Brasileirão Serie A, we observe how we get different surprises and, this is mainly because the teams are adjusting all the necessary pieces to reach their optimal level of play and this will allow them to win more games.

On this matchday 16, this has not been the exception, the teams that are fighting for the top of the standings have not taken advantage of Palmeiras’ skid in their match against the worst team in the league, to take over the first place. Meanwhile, Corinthians continues to demonstrate the consistency that has characterized them in this first half of the season.

Another team that missed the opportunity to take the lead was Paranaense, although they had a complicated match, they lost for the first time in many weeks and this caused them to drop to fifth place in the standings.

The positive thing about all this, not for the teams, but us, Brazilian soccer lovers, is that now there is a much more beautiful fight between 5 teams for first place in the standings, which makes us sure of the excellent second half of the season that we are going to have.

Palmeiras failed to take advantage of the golden opportunity they had on matchday 16, when they played against the last team in the standings, Fortaleza, to extend their lead over their closest pursuers.

It was an atypical match for them in every way. Being the highest-scoring team of the tournament and facing the bottom team of the league, they failed to score any of the chances they had and ended up with a 0-0 draw on the scoreboard.

Palmeiras owned the ball throughout the match, but Fortaleza’s defense played their best game of the season and managed to prevent Palmeiras from scoring, even 1 goal.

After this match, Palmeiras continues to lead the standings with 30 points, only 1 point ahead of Corinthians and 2 ahead of Atlético Mineiro. While Fortaleza remains at the bottom of the table with 11 points.

The best match in terms of squad-level on this matchday 16 of the Brazilian soccer championship was undoubtedly this one between Atlético Mineiro and São Paulo, which ended in a 0-0 draw on the scoreboard.

This match was a stalemate at various times, with Atlético Mineiro trying to exert a lot of pressure to take advantage of their home ground, but São Paulo managed to get out of danger and avoid any scoring chances created by the home team.

The match was set to end in a draw, both teams were playing at an almost identical level, and we all expected the tie to be consummated. The first half was a back-and-forth affair for both teams, with several chances created, but no danger for the opposing goalkeepers.

In the second half, Corinthians started a little more active than Flamengo and, in a fortuitous action where, after a cross from the left flank by Corinthians, Flamengo’s right back, Rodinei, trying to clear the ball, connected it wrongly and ended up scoring an own goal.

After this goal, both teams went on the attack. However, the goalkeepers were outstanding in their respective goals to prevent the opponents from scoring. Corinthians had a clear chance to score the second goal before the end of the match, but Guedes missed the one-on-one with the rival goalkeeper.

After this match, Corinthians climbed back to second place and moved only 1 point behind PalmeirasFlamengo dropped to ninth place in the table with 21 points.
