US Open 2022 – Event Overview and Preview

The US Open 2022, is going to be at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in NYC. It has been scheduled from August 29th to September 11th.

This event is the 142nd edition of the US Open and takes place outdoors on a hard surface.

It is also the fourth and the last Grand Slam Event of the year.

US Open 2022 – Event Overview

Held by the International Tennis Federation (ITF), the US Open forms part of the 2022 ATP Tour and the 2022 WTA Tour calendars under the Grand Slam category. 

The tournament will consist of both men’s and women’s singles and doubles draw. Both doubles draws will return to standard 64 players; as singles players will remain in the standard 128-person format in each category. 

There are also singles and doubles events for both boys and girls (players under 18). These are part of the Grade A category of tournaments.

Event Preview:

Along with the prize money comes some blockbuster names; including Serena Williams, who has announced she will retire after this tournament. 

Rafael Nadal will look to tie Williams’ Grand Slam record (23) in New York. Meanwhile, 2021 US Open champions Daniil Medvedev and Emma Raducanu are hoping to defend their titles. 

American Naomi Osaka will return to action after missing Wimbledon, and fellow American Coco Gauff is riding serious momentum after making the French Open final earlier this year.

Some notable names who won’t be present in New York: Novak Djokovic, Alexander Zverev, Angelique Kerber, and Sania Mirza have each withdrawn from the tournament.

Broadcast:

In the United States, the 2022 US Open currently runs for the eighth year in a row under an 11-year, $825 million contract with ESPN, in which the broadcaster holds exclusive rights to the entire tournament and the US Open Series. 

This means that the tournament is not available on broadcast television, only on ESPN and ESPN+.
