Penultimate round of the MLS regular season, and several playoff spots are still up for grabs, with some teams able to lock theirs in now.

In the Eastern Conference, the nine qualifiers are already set, and it only remains to be seen who will go directly to the playoffs and who will head to the Play-In. However, in the West, seven teams are fighting for the last four spots.

The most notable matchup will be between Salt Lake and Colorado Rapids, two of the teams involved, where a favorable result for the hosts could trigger an immediate shift.

Dallas will be keeping an eye on that, but first, they will host the defending champions, LA Galaxy, who will be looking to avoid finishing last.

Meanwhile, theHouston Dynamo will host the conference leaders, San Diego FC, while the San Jose Earthquakes will head to Canada to face the Vancouver Whitecaps, who sit in second place.

MLS Matchday 34: Dallas vs. LA Galaxy

FC Dallas is playing their last cards. With 38 points, a goal difference of -4, and one game in hand, they sit in 10th place, tied on points with ninth-place San Jose Earthquakes, who currently hold the Play-In spot. They know that catching up with a win would move them into eighth place, but they must win to keep fighting for a direct spot in the playoffs. They are unbeaten in seven games, winning three of them.

On LA Galaxy’s side, they are among the worst defending champions—if not the worst. With 24 points, they are last in the entire league after five wins, nine draws, and 17 losses, scoring 41 goals and conceding 62.They are coming off a 4-1 win over Kansas City with a hat-trick from Joseph Paintsil, but they have not been able to win away all season, with seven draws and nine losses.

The Houston Dynamo are on the edge. With 36 points, they are in 12th place, and with a couple of teams above them holding a game in hand, they know a loss would mean elimination. They have nine wins, nine draws, and 14 losses, and have managed one win in their last four matches, or worse, two in their last 11. The positive note is that in the only matchthey have played against this opponent, they won (3-4).

San Diego did not expect this. In their debut season, they are leading the West with 57 points after 17 wins, six draws, and nine losses, boasting one of the best attacks with 56 goals. However, they are currently in their second-worst stretch of the campaign, as for the second time, they have gone three straight games without a win, earning only one point in that span.

It’s the most important match of the weekend. Real Salt Lake is in 11th place with 37 points and a game in hand. They are coming off a 3-1 win over Austin, although at home they have alternated wins and losses over their last six games.

Colorado is in eighth place with 40 points, four behind Portland Timbers, so they need to hold on to that Play-In spot.They have only managed one win in their last five matches and lost three, meaning they are not going through a good spell. In addition, they have earned just 16 of 48 points on the road.

The Vancouver Whitecaps are another team that has had a great season. They are second in the West with 57 points, the same as leaders San Diego FC, and with a game in hand. They are on a six-game unbeaten run, winning three of those, though their last two matches ended in draws.

The San Jose Earthquakes are in ninth place with 38 points, currently holding the last Play-In spot, but two teams below them have a game in hand, so even if they win both of their remaining matches, they might still not advance. After three straight losses, they broke the streak with a 1-0 away win over San Diego.
