African Cup Quarterfinals: Nigeria vs. Angola Preview

Last Updated on January 31, 2024 12:00 pm by Erwin Noguera

This African Cup edition has provided us with plenty of surprises. However, there are still some favorites alive, and one is Nigeria, who will take Angola in the quarterfinals.

The Super Eagles come from having a quiet afternoon with a poor Cameroon in the round of 16, where a double from Ademola Lookman makes the deal.

The Palancas Negras had a roller-coaster of a match against Namibia, where they achieved the win with goals from Dala (x2) and Mabululu after the early expulsion of their goalkeeper, Neblú.

Why bet on Nigeria?

Nigeria is always a candidate for the African Cup, considering that, historically, they always possessed strong assets in their team. That is the case in this edition as well, with names like Kelechi Iheanacho, Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and more upfront. It’s fair to say that they are now the biggest favorites, but must first surpass a solid Angola.

They finished second in the group stage behind the surprising Equatorial Guinea, drawing with the latter and then beating Ivory Coast and Guinea-Bissau. They still landed an easy rival, defeating a Cameroon far from its best.

They report no casualties for this match.

Why bet on Angola?

Angola started the tournament as a second-line candidate but has become stronger with each game. The big West African nation doesn’t have a great football tradition but has assembled a solid team with interesting names, primarily with experience in Portuguese and Turkish football. Gelson Dala and Mabululu are between the best scorers from the tournament (4 and 3), with the former just one goal shy of Emilio Nsue at the top from the already eliminated Equatorial Guinea.

They had the same performance as their next rivals in the group stage, first drawing with Algeria and then beating Mauritania and Burkina Faso. This will be the best rival they have faced till now and will test what they are made for.

As said before, the most sensible absence will be that of first-choice goalkeeper Neblú.

Nigeria vs. Angola Final Betting Analysis:

These two teams have not faced much in their history, with just ten matches. Of those, half were ties, while three wins went to Nigeria and two to Angola. Even if, historically, one selection is much stronger, there’s not much of a difference.

The odds strongly point to a comfortable win by the Eagles, but this African Cup edition has already provided us with plenty of surprises, and, truth be told, most of the favorites have not been eliminated by the continent’s elite, precisely speaking. We believe the good form of Angola’s forwards will give problems to Nigeria, achieving a draw, where the giants will triumph in penalties.

Go for a draw at 3.5. If you bet $100 at such odds, you could get $250 for a total payout of $350.

Nigeria vs. Angola Betting Pick: Draw (Nigeria win on penalties)
