Premier League Matchday 17 Roundup

Last Updated on December 18, 2023 12:41 pm by Erwin Noguera

The matchday 17 of the Premier League left a new change at the top, as Liverpool failed to win the derby against Manchester United at Anfield Road and lost first place.

Jürgen Klopp’s side were ahead of all their opponents. However, a bad night from their attackers led to a goalless draw against the Red Devils, still far from the places that give access to European tournaments.

The Reds slip allowed Arsenal, who beat Brighton 2-0, to climb to the top of the English league with 39 points.

Tottenham again took all three points, thanks to their victory over Nottingham Forest, and moved closer to Manchester City but it was Aston Villa, who now have the same points as Liverpool, who positively took the day.

What Aston Villa is living this season is a dream, confirmed with their last victory visiting Brentford, who they beat 2-1.

Before the end of the first half, Keane Lewis-Potter gave the home side the lead by grabbing a rebound on the edge of the box. It was not a good performance for the Villans, but Ben Mee got a red card for the Bees after 71 minutes, and that was a turning point. Six minutes later, at 77′, Alex Moreno appeared at the far post to head in the equalizer, while striker Ollie Watkins, at 85′, also with his head, put the game to bed.

The team coached by Spanish Unai Emery is in third position, with the same points as Liverpool (38), but with a goal difference of +16, while the Reds have +21. Aston Villa is just one unit behind leaders Arsenal.

Liverpool had a golden opportunity to stay at the top of the Premier League and increase their lead over Manchester City, who are in the doldrums, but at home, they looked shaky and ended up with a goalless draw in the derby against Manchester United.

Jürgen Klopp’s side had the whole team at their disposal to face the big match of matchday 17. However, Mohamed Salah, Luis Díaz, and Darwin Núñez were not on their best night, while, defensively, United was in great shape and had André Onana and Raphael Varane as the stars of the day.

The home side had thirty shots, eight on target, and twelve corners, while the visitors only had six shots, of which only one was on target and no corners.

The Reds are second with 38 points, one point behind Arsenal, their opponent on the next matchday, in another game at Anfield. Erik ten Hag’s team are seventh with 28 points, six behind fourth-placed Manchester City.
