The Premier League had a heart-stopping matchday 33 that left Manchester City as the big winner, not only because they beat Luton but also because they are now the new leaders due to the stumbles of Arsenal and Liverpool.

The Gunners played at home but could not beat Aston Villa, while the Reds were surprised at Anfield by Crystal Palace.

For their part, Tottenham lost fourth place in the league when they were humiliated in their visit to Newcastle. Aston Villa is the new guest, for now, in the Champions League.

In the improvement of the results they are experiencing, Newcastle gave Tottenham a hard blow, beating them 4-0 at St. James Park, with striker Alexander Isak being the star of the night.

The Swede’s first goal came in the 30th minute when he put the ball into the back of the net with his right foot after a pass from Anthony Gordon. The latter made the second two minutes later when he latched on to an opponent and beat the goalkeeper. Isak celebrated the third with a cross-shot, and Fabian Schar closed the account in the 87th minute with a header.

The Magpies reached 50 points and are now qualified for the Conference League, while the Spurs remained with 60 points in fifth place, three behind Aston Villa, although they have a game in hand.

Manchester City showed no mercy against Luton, beating them 5-1 at the Etihad to become the new leader of the Premier League. Despite having the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid in a few days, Pep Guardiola fielded most of his players, and it paid off.

Luck was on the side of the Citizens, who took the lead with a goal against Daiki Hashioka after a shot by Erling Haaland (2′). Mateo Kovacic scored a superb goal when he fired in a first-time pass from Julián Álvarez (64′), while Haaland scored the third from the penalty spot (76′). Ross Barkley pulled one back for Luton, but Jerémy Doku rounded two defenders (87′), and Josko Gvardiol slammed home at the near post (90+3′) to put the home side’s party to bed.

City reached 73 points and has a two-point lead over Arsenal and Liverpool, while Luton is 18th with 25 and is losing the category by one point.

It is probably the worst moment of the season for Liverpool. After losing 0-3 at home to Atalanta in the Europa League, the Reds suffered another setback at Anfield, losing 0-1 to Crystal Palace and falling to third place in the Premier League, when two matchdays ago they were at the top of the league.

The only goal of the game was by Eberechi Eze, who only had to push in a cross from the left by Tyrick Mitchell after 14 minutes. The Reds had clear chances, but goalkeeper Dean Henderson kept everything out of his net.  More than 20 shots were not enough for the home club.

Klopp’s side have gone three games without a win and now depend on City and Arsenal losing points to become English champions. On the other hand, the Eagles got three important points in the fight against relegation, as they climbed to 14th place with 33 units.

Arsenal played knowing the results of Manchester City and Liverpool but did not take advantage of it and instead disappointed their fans by losing 0-2 at home to Aston Villa.

The Gunners tried hard, especially in the first half, but could not overcome the resistance of their former goalkeeper, Dibu Martinez. In the second half, the team fell apart in the last minutes.

First, it was Leon Bailey, in the 84th minute, who finished off a cross from the left by Lucas Digne to make the score 0-1, while Ollie Watkins put the second in the 87th minute in an accurate counter-attack where he ran in on goal and shot the ball past goalkeeper David Raya.

The Londoners, who have a good goal difference in their favor, are second with 71 points, so now the leader is City. Aston Villa is fourth with 63 points and is securing a place in the next Champions League.
