Serie A Matchday 21 Roundup

Last Updated on January 23, 2024 8:08 pm by Erwin Noguera

In the blink of an eye, we are just 17 rounds shy of the end of the Serie A season. Matchday 21 was a hilly one, due to the celebration of the Supercoppa. However, we still saw some changes in the table, especially at the top, as Juventus took the chance to surpass Inter and put a lot of pressure on them. Outside of that, most of the teams in the top ten didn’t play due to the suspended matches.

Whatever the case, we still had a lot of interesting duels, and we’ll check out the most relevant ones.

The Mourinho era is over, and with it, Roma will have to restructure, for the good or the bad. In this mist of doubts, the team received a weak Verona, with the sole objective of preventing further shame.

They achieved it thanks to Lukaku and Pellegrini. The first goal game came after a good play from El Sharawy, who found the Belgian in the area for the definition. For the second, there was participation for the center-forward again, as he made a great center towards the box, where the Italian midfielder found the ball after a rebound and sent it to the back of the net.

In the second half, Milan Djuric sent a penalty to the clouds, before Folorunsho found the back of the net after a kilometric strike and a poor response by Rui Patricio. There is a lot of work to do for ‘La Lupa,’ as the second half was a disaster, and they didn’t suffer a comeback by a fluke.

Controversy was the central point of talk in European soccer this weekend, it seems. Surprisingly, in Italy, it was not due to an issue with the referee but to a distasteful attitude by the Udinese fans. Racist chants towards Mike Maignan ended up with the stoppage of the match at minute 33, as he decided to walk off the pitch with the rest of the squad.

Apart from the issues, it was a great game from beginning to end and one with a heavy atmosphere. Ruben Loftus-Cheek opened the score early after an assist from Hernandez. Later, Udinese turned the score. Lazar Samardzic tied the match after a great individual play, and then, already in the second half, Florian Thauvin took advantage of an error by Milan’s defense to get the second.

The second comeback of the game started with Luka Jovic, as the Serbian appeared to define after a shoot by Giroud hit the bar. Later, already in injury time, Noah Okafor found himself alone with the ball after a corner to put final numbers to the match.

Juve established itself at the top of the table after completely obliterating poor Lecce, who couldn’t get a hold of the match even at home. With more possession, the team from Via del Mare didn’t find a way to hurt the visitors, with just three shots at target.

The first half was uneventful, but the on-form Serbian in front of the Bianconero attack got a brace in the second half. The first was with a powerful Voley that saw the ball enter the back of the goal from the top corner. Less than ten minutes later, he interfered in a McKennie header to score again. Towards the end of the duel, Bremer won in the altitudes to seal the match with a thrashing.
