One of the surprises of this UEFA Champions League matchday 4 was undoubtedly Juventus’ shocking defeat in their visit to Maccabi Haifa with a score of 0-2. With this result, la Vecchia Signora is virtually eliminated from this competition, depending on many results to be able to reach the round of 16.

With Di Maria in the starting eleven and without Arkadiusz Milik and Filip Kostic, Vlahovic’s best friends (as Maximiliano Allegri had already warned), Maccabi Haifa came out in front of their fans eager to prove that their effort in Turin was not a mirage and achieved a historic victory against one of the most important teams in the world.

And it all started very early, in the 7th minute, after a cross from Cornud in the middle of the Italian area, Omer Atzili was in charge of putting the score 1-0 in favor of the home team. From this point on, Juventus began to show its worst side in many years.

Everything got worse when, in the 24th minute, Angel Di Maria went off injured. The problems continued for the Vecchia Signora and, before the end of the first half, Maccabi Haifa put the final numbers to this match, again through a great goal by Omer Atzili in the 42nd minute.

Juventus creates chances and dominate the ball with ease against most opponents. They, however, lack decision in the final third, and in defense, especially on the air, look as weak as ever. The injuries don’t help and is especially worrisome the situation of Angel Di Maria, who is having his worst lapse of health in ages, just before the World Cup.

With this result, Maccabi Haifa begins to dream of at least getting the pass to the Europa League, while Juventus needs two victories against Benfica and PSG and hope for other results in their favor in this group.

Result: Maccabi Haifa (2) – (0) Juventus

Napoli has consolidated its position as one of the strongest teams in Europe after signing a spectacular start where they have not known defeat so far this season, and they have proved it in the 2022/23 edition of the UEFA Champions League with a 4-2 victory over Ajax, which qualifies them to the round of 16. The team coached by Luciano Spalletti took all possible points so far in Group A, in which Liverpool is its main pursuer.

Napoli repeated the dose they applied in Amsterdam last week and once again gave a blow on the table against a very important team like Ajax, which in recent seasons has shown great progress by giving excellent Champions League performances. Now they are partially eliminated with 2 games to play.

With the conviction to break the deadlock quickly, Napoli made its presence felt and played to the delight of its fans at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium. In the third minute of the match, Mexican Hirving Lozano scored the first goal for his team with a header.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia once again proved to be the most energetic and unbalanced player for the local team, with his great ball handling, speed, and advances to dismantle the defenses. In the 16th minute, after a great play by Kvaratskhelia, Giacomo Raspadori scored Napoli’s second goal.

At the start of the second half, Ajax wanted to turn the score around and managed to cut the deficit with Davy Klassen’s goal in the 49th minute. However, 13 minutes later, Napoli struck again and scored their third goal through a penalty shot by Kvaratskhelia.

Ajax was still dreaming of a comeback, and in the 83rd minute Steven Bergwijn scored from the penalty spot to make it 2-3. However, Napoli put the game to bed six minutes later through Victor Osimhen.

With this result, Napoli qualifies for the round of 16 with 12/12 points, while Ajax is on the ropes and is not dependent on them to advance to the next round.

Result: Ajax (2) – (4) Napoli

Disappointments on one side and joy on the other, this was this great match that ended with a spectacular score of 3-3 between Inter and FC Barcelona, where the Spanish team was playing for their lives in this tournament and could not after blunders that condemned them.

The match started with a sensational pace, both teams looking to get ahead on the scoreboard, but with good performances by Ter Stegen on the part of FC Barcelona and Inter’s defense.

With an overflow action on the right flank by Brazilian Raphina, who made an excellent pass to Sergi Roberto who in turn crossed to the center of the box, Dembélé took advantage and pushed the ball into the back of Inter’s net to score Barça’s first goal in the 40th minute.

The second half was a gale of errors for the Culés’ defense. In the 50th minute, Piqué, returning to the starting lineup due to FC Barcelona’s rash of injuries, made a mistake that set up Inter’s first goal for Nicolo Barella.

Another carelessness in Barcelona’s defense, this time by Eric Garcia, allowed Lautaro Martinez to score Inter’s second goal in the 63rd minute.

Barça woke up and went on the attack and, with a bit of luck, Robert Lewandowski managed to equalize the match 2-2 in the 82nd minute. With the crowd cheering and the team inspired, they tried to go up on the scoreboard, but, in a counterattack, Inter scored 3-2 in the 89th minute.

After this goal, everything seemed to be over for FC Barcelona, and they were being eliminated from the tournament, but, in the 90+2 Lewandowski managed to score the definitive 3-3 after a spectacular cross from Eric Garcia.

With this result, Inter is just one win away against Viktoria Plzeñ to qualify for the round of 16 and eliminate FC Barcelona.

Result: Inter (3) – (3) FC Barcelona

A true duel of titans also pitted AC Milan against Chelsea on matchday 4. The London side had easily dominated the Italians just a week ago with a 3-0 scoreline and was now in second place in the group. Meanwhile, Milan had the opportunity to take revenge and take a step forward in their goal of qualifying.

However, not everything turned out as the Italians expected. From the 18th minute, after Fikayo Tomori’s red card, Milan had to close down and was put on the ropes at the mercy of a Chelsea team that has been growing during the season.

Chelsea opened the scoring in the 21st minute after a penalty shot by Jorginho. With this goal, the English team took even more control of the match, and, 13 minutes later, they managed to score the second and final goal in the legs of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

It was a very difficult match for Milan, who had to play with one man down for almost the entire match. This can be seen in the offensive statistics, as Milan only shot at goal in 1 opportunity and the possession of the ball was a mere 29%.

With this result, Chelsea climbed to first place in Group E, while Milan dropped to third place. In other words, everything will be defined in the last two matchdays.

Result: Milan (0) – (2) Chelsea
