Brasileirão Matchday 38 Roundup

Last Updated on December 7, 2023 8:35 pm by Erwin Noguera

The Brasileirão matchday 38 ended, and the champion defended its crown, as Palmeiras once again won the biggest title in Brazilian soccer after a draw with Cruzeiro on the last matchday.

It was a matter of formality for the ‘Verdão’ to win their 12th league title since the goal difference had practically decided the tournament with one game to go.

The only thing at stake was relegation, and Bahia did the job, beating Atletico Mineiro at home and keeping the category. The same cannot be said of Santos, who will play in Serie B for the first time in its history.

Botafogo, which led for most of the Brasileirão, closed the championship with a defeat, losing even a direct place in the next Copa Libertadores.

Botafogo will go down in history as one of the most unusual events in soccer. They were 31 games in the lead, had a 16-point advantage and a bad final run left them without a title and a direct place in the group stage of the Copa Libertadores. It closed the Brasileirão with a 3-1 defeat at Internacional de Porto Alegre.

History opened quickly for the ‘Colorado’, as at 19 minutes Enner Valencia opened the account with a left-footed cross-shot in the area. At 46′, Janderson headed in a cross from the right to make it 1-1 for the ‘Fogao,’ but at 48′, Alan Patrick controlled with quality in the area to inflate the net and make it 2-1, while at 52′ Pedro Henrique sealed the victory with another cross-shot that left the rival goalkeeper with no options.

Botafogo ended its 11-match winless streak in fifth place with 64 points, qualifying for the Libertadores’ previous phase. Internacional finished ninth with 55 points and will play in the Sudamericana.
