Champions League Matchday 6 and Group Stage Roundup

Last Updated on December 14, 2023 6:19 pm by Erwin Noguera

The Champions League group stage ended in matchday 6 with two European powerhouses out of the round of 16, as Manchester United and AC Milan failed to advance in their groups.

The ‘Red Devils’ were beaten by Bayern Munich at Old Trafford and missed the chance to reach another round. They finished last in their group.

The luck was better for the ‘Rossoneri,’ who at least beat Newcastle and ensured their transition to the Europa League. Borussia Dortmund and PSG, who drew in Germany, will be in the last 16 of the European tournament.

Real Madrid and Manchester City are the only teams to have reached 18 points in this phase.

Real Madrid even had the luxury of missing a penalty in Germany and won 3-2 on their visit to Union Berlin, which ended the locals’ European dream.

A minute after Modric’s missed penalty, at 45+1′, Kevin Volland put the Teutons ahead with a shot in front of goalkeeper Kepa. Joselu equalized with a header from a cross by Rodrygo (61′), and the Spanish striker himself scored the second at 72′ when he put Fran García’s pass from the left flank into the net. Alex Kral equalized at 85′ with a mid-range shot, but Dani Ceballos gave the Spaniards the three points with a cross-shot in the box.

This was one of the most attractive matches of the last matchday, as Borussia Dortmund was the judge of PSG, but with the 1-1 draw, both teams ended up advancing to the Champions League.

The Teutons took the lead in the 51st minute with a shot from Karim Adeyemi in the heart of the box, after a pass from striker Niclas Füllkrug. Warren Zaïre-Emery equalized with a shot just inside the right post in the 56th minute.

Dortmund secured first place with 11 points, winning the group of death. PSG was second with 8 points, going through with a goal difference of +1, but with a really poor level.

Newcastle had a terrible Champions League, finishing last in their group and losing 2-1 at home to Milan, squandering the opportunity to advance to the last 16.

The ‘Magpies’ scored the first goal through Joelinton with a bomb on the edge of the area in the 33rd minute. Christian Pulisic equalized with an assist from Olivier Giroud that left him alone to shoot past the goalkeeper, while Samuel Chukwueze scored the final goal at 84′ in a counterattack where Noah Okafor ended up setting him up.

The ‘Rossoneri’ finished third with eight points, leaving them on the outside with a goal difference of -2. The Italian club will play in the Europa League, and the English team will be out of international competition for the rest of the season.
