Team Overview

Pittsburgh enters 2026 under new leadership for the first time in nearly two decades after Mike Tomlin’s 19-year run without a losing season came to a close. Mike McCarthy takes over and immediately reunites with Aaron Rodgers, who has called this his final NFL season, giving the Steelers a familiar coach-quarterback pairing from their Green Bay days. The roster added weapons like Michael Pittman Jr. and Rico Dowdle around a defense still anchored by T.J. Watt and Patrick Queen.

After capturing the division a year ago, Pittsburgh now faces a transition season with plenty of variables, from a new offensive system to questions about quarterback depth behind an aging Rodgers.

Offensive Line Analysis

Pittsburgh’s line is talented but unsettled, with Troy Fautanu sliding from right tackle to left tackle, Mason McCormick moving inside to guard, and Pro Bowl-caliber center Zach Frazier as the lone lineman staying put from a year ago. New offensive line coach James Campen inherits real upside here, but the shuffling, plus lingering questions about Broderick Jones’ health after neck surgery, make this a unit that could take time to settle into its final form.

Defensive Line Analysis

The Steelers’ defense still runs through T.J. Watt and Cameron Heyward up front, with Patrick Queen anchoring the linebacker corps under new defensive coordinator Patrick Graham. Last year’s unit finished just 17th in points allowed, so improved consistency in the trenches will be essential if McCarthy’s Steelers want to complement a retooled offense rather than lean on it to cover for defensive lapses.

2026 NFL Season

Week 1

Steelers vs. Atlanta Falcons | Sunday, September 13 | 1:00 PM ET | Acrisure Stadium, Pittsburgh, PA

Pittsburgh opens as a home favorite at -175 on the moneyline against Atlanta’s +145, with the total set at 42.5 points, one of the lower marks on the Week 1 board. That modest number reflects lingering questions about both offenses, even with Rodgers making his Steelers debut in front of a home crowd eager to see the McCarthy era get off to a winning start.

A favorable home opener against a Falcons team still finding its own footing gives McCarthy a real chance to open his Pittsburgh tenure with a win.

Week 2

Steelers at New England Patriots | Sunday, September 20 | 1:00 PM ET | Gillette Stadium, Foxborough, MA

Pittsburgh heads on the road as an underdog at +195 on the moneyline against New England’s -238, with the spread at -5.5 and the total set at just 41.5 points, again among the lowest marks on the board. The Steelers got the McCarthy era off to a winning start against Atlanta, while the Patriots opened with a defeat in Seattle in the Super Bowl LX rematch and will be desperate to avoid 0-2 in front of their own crowd.

Rodgers on the road against a Drake Maye offense that finished second in MVP voting last season is a step up in class from the opener, and laying under 42 points says the market expects another grind. Pittsburgh can keep it close, but New England is the right side.ç

Week 3

Bengals at Pittsburgh Steelers | Sunday, September 27 | 1:00 PM ET | Acrisure Stadium, Pittsburgh, PA

Pittsburgh return home as underdogs at +142 on the moneyline against Cincinnati’s -170, with the spread at +3.5 and the total set at 43.5 points, another number in the low forties for a team that keeps being priced into grinds. The Steelers are 1-1 but arrive off the worst performance of the young McCarthy era, a 20-3 defeat at Gillette in which the offense never found the end zone and a strip-sack was returned for a score in the fourth quarter. Cincinnati come in at 2-0 and looking like the class of the division, having held Houston to six points at NRG while Joe Burrow threw a pair of touchdowns to Ja’Marr Chase.

Being a home underdog to Cincinnati is not unfamiliar territory for this franchise, and the 3.5 is short enough to leave the door open in a division game where the last ten years of history count for more than the last ten days. The problem is that Pittsburgh have given the market nothing to work with: three points against New England, and a total of 43.5 that assumes they will not need many more than that. Rodgers has one good half and one bad game to his name in black and gold, and until the offense produces something, taking the points is a bet on the rivalry rather than on the team.

Week 4

Steelers at Cleveland Browns | Thursday, October 1 | 8:15 PM ET | Huntington Bank Field, Cleveland, OH

Pittsburgh open as 2.5-point road favorites at -148 on the moneyline against Cleveland’s +124, with the total sitting at 38.5, the lowest mark of the week and down from 40.5 at the open. The Steelers are 2-1 after beating Cincinnati 30-27, a result that arrived seven days after they were held to three points at New England. Cleveland are also 2-1, as is every team in this division.

The 30 points against the Bengals remain the outlier rather than the pattern: Pittsburgh are averaging 3.81 yards per play across the season and the offensive line and pass-catching rotation have both been thinned by injury. A 38.5 total in Cleveland on a short week is the market pricing a grind, and the model backs the Steelers by just 1.6 points. Pittsburgh should win it, but nothing about this suggests a comfortable Thursday night.

Predictions

Overall Record: 8-9

Playoff Chances: A true coin flip, sitting right on the playoff bubble

Super Bowl Chances: A distant long shot this season.

Pittsburgh’s outlook is tied directly to how quickly McCarthy’s offense clicks with Rodgers and how the defense adjusts to life without Tomlin’s steady hand. A return to the playoffs is possible but far from guaranteed, and the season may ultimately be judged more by the foundation McCarthy builds than by the final record.
