The Washington Commanders enter the 2026 season attempting to recover from one of the biggest disappointments of 2025. Defensive Line Analysis

The Commanders are trying to build a younger and more athletic defensive front. Washington has made significant investments in young defenders while adding veterans with upside. Sonny Styles is perhaps the most interesting piece because his versatility allows Washington to use him as a linebacker, coverage player or box defender. Joshua Josephs is another young defender generating attention during camp. The Commanders need the front seven to improve substantially after struggling to consistently pressure quarterbacks and stop opposing offenses. The upside is that the defense is now faster and younger, but there is still a major gap between potential and proven NFL production.

Washington has arguably the toughest possible opening matchup: a road game against the defending division champion.

The current market has Philadelphia favored by roughly 5.5 points, with the Eagles around -238 ML and Washington approximately +195. The total sits around 46.5 in the latest Fox Sports market.

The matchup becomes even more difficult because Washington’s offensive line is already dealing with the loss of Laremy Tunsil. The Commanders need Jayden Daniels to create explosive plays, but Philadelphia’s defense is built to punish mistakes.

Washington can absolutely cover if Daniels is healthy and plays at his 2024 level, but Philadelphia remains the safer side.
