Continuity is the story here. San Francisco returns all five starters, which is rare in the modern league and particularly valuable in a Shanahan run scheme that depends on timing between linemen. Trent Williams remains one of the best tackles in football, landing at No. 40 on the NFL’s Top 100 list, and Jake Brendel holds down the middle. Chris Foerster has coached this group for years and stepped into head coaching duties during Shanahan’s recovery without disruption. The concern is age at the top rather than talent or depth. Keeping Williams upright for a full season has become an annual question, and the offense looks materially different when he is out.

Twenty sacks. That number, the lowest in the NFL, is the entire reason this offseason looked the way it did. Bosa missed most of the year and the front had nothing behind him, with San Francisco finishing last in the league in sack rate. Odighizuwa arrives via trade to strengthen the interior, and the 49ers used third and fourth-round picks on edge rusher Romello Height and defensive tackle Gracen Halton, who has been one of the most disruptive interior rushers in camp. Alfred Collins is working back from shoulder surgery. Morris has talked about more versatility in the front, and Lynch was blunt that everything for this team starts with making life miserable up front. A healthy Bosa fixes most of this on his own.

The 49ers opened at +2.5 with a moneyline of +124 against Los Angeles at -148 and a total of 48.5. The spread has since firmed toward three points. Both teams finished 12-5 last season and both were knocked out by Seattle.
The matchup history favors San Francisco more than the number suggests. Mac Jones started both meetings against the Rams last season and the 49ers still moved the ball efficiently through the air, posting a positive EPA per play in Week 5 against a secondary that has since been rebuilt around Trent McDuffie. Purdy is a clear upgrade on that. The question is whether a pass rush that produced 20 sacks all of last season can pressure Matthew Stafford before he finds Puka Nacua.

San Francisco has the most talent of any third-place team in football. Purdy won six of his final seven starts after returning from turf toe, McCaffrey was Comeback Player of the Year on a league-high 450 touches, and the receiver room went from thin to deep in one offseason. What holds this team back is the same thing that ended last season. The defense was below average per play against both the run and the pass, its sack rate was the worst in the league, and its interception rate was second-worst. Better health should fix a lot of that, but the Niners have to prove it against Seattle and Los Angeles rather than on paper.
