Seattle enters 2026 as the defending champion after beating New England 29-13 in Super Bowl LX. The Seahawks went 14-3, beat the Rams in a close NFC Championship Game, then dismantled the Patriots by forcing eight punts on New England’s first nine possessions. Mike Macdonald is entering his third season and has already delivered the second title in franchise history.
John Schneider’s response was to keep the band together rather than chase headlines the way Los Angeles did with Myles Garrett. Seattle lost only five contributors from a 17-win season and re-signed every other free agent, with no cap casualties. The departures that matter: offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak left to become head coach of the Raiders, running back Kenneth Walker III signed with Kansas City, and cornerback Riq Woolen, safety Coby Bryant and edge rusher Boye Mafe all moved on. Sam Darnold returns at quarterback with Jaxon Smith-Njigba as his top target and Cooper Kupp still on the roster. HBO’s Hard Knocks has been following the whole thing.

Continuity is the entire story, and it is a bigger deal here than anywhere else in the division. Seattle returns all five starters: Charles Cross at left tackle, Grey Zabel at left guard, Jalen Sundell at center, Anthony Bradford at right guard and Abraham Lucas at right tackle. In fact the Seahawks brought back all eleven linemen who played a snap last season. Pro Football Focus graded this group 15th in the league in 2025, a jump from 31st the year before, and John Benton returns for a second season coaching them. Bradford is playing a contract year at right guard, the one spot where the coaching staff has invited competition. This unit is no longer the weakness it was two years ago.

This is the best front in the division and arguably in football. Leonard Williams was a second-team All-Pro at defensive tackle last season and DeMarcus Lawrence made the Pro Bowl on the edge, and both are back. Seattle allowed the fewest points in the NFL at 17.1 per game and ranked first against the run. The Seahawks lost Mafe from the rotation and answered by signing Dante Fowler Jr., who cited conversations with Aden Durde and Lawrence as the reason he came. The interior advantage this group holds over most offensive lines is exactly what buried New England in February, when Seattle sacked Drake Maye six times and intercepted him twice.

Seattle opens the entire NFL season at home in a Super Bowl rematch, the first time an opener has carried that billing. The Seahawks opened at -3.5 with a moneyline of -192 against New England’s +160 and a total of 44.5. That is the same spread as the Super Bowl itself, despite Seattle now holding home field, which says the market has quietly moved toward the Patriots over the summer.
New England has reason for that. The Patriots traded for A.J. Brown this offseason to give Maye a genuine number one receiver, and their line spent the postseason as the weak point Seattle exploited. What changes for Seattle is the running game. Walker carried the load against New England in February and is now in Kansas City, leaving a thin backfield with Zach Charbonnet’s Week 1 status unresolved. Darnold may have to win this one throwing.

Seattle is the only team in this division that has actually won something, and the roster that did it is almost entirely intact. The defense allowed the fewest points in football, the offensive line returns all five starters, and Macdonald has treated camp like a team with something to prove rather than one coasting on a ring. The two real questions are a first-time playcaller in Brian Fleury, Seattle’s fourth coordinator in four seasons, and a running back room that lost its lead back with no clear replacement. No team has repeated since the 2004 Patriots, and this division makes it harder. Expect the Seahawks to be right there anyway.
